View Full Version : Cable driven throttle body on 2007 1NZ?

I did an oil change on a scion with the 1NZ the other day and they had an analog throttle body on it and was wondering if anyone had thought of converting their yaris to the same layout and, if so were there any codes being thrown about it? I'm not a fan of ETB's and much rather the old style throttle bodies.

To do so requires standalone engine management, in place of the ECM, as the drive by wire throttle is a key input (via a dual circuit) to the ECM and without it being present the ECM will not feed the injectors. On Garm's turbo Yaris he had done the cable throttle, but he was running standalone management.
With the stock ECM the only way to make it work would be to feed the ECM a pair of fake accelerator pedal sensor signals relative to the throttle position sensor on the throttle body. This is doable, but would require some development to do.

+1 - won't work without changing using a standalone ECU.

I've thought about making my yaris think it is a toyota echo.....convert to throttle cable and non-abs brakes.
What all does the ecm control? ...what would you loose if you ran a yaris with the echo ecm?

The Echo is not CAN based, so you would have issues with the power steering, body ECU (door locks if equipped, door open status, etc.), and instrument cluster if you switched to a Echo ECM.
If there is enough interest and a commitment to the interest, I would be willing to develop the interface necessary to allow a cable throttle to work with the stock Yaris ECM.

I thought that there had been some development along these lines, but the TPS conversion was found to be unfeasible. Perhaps I'm mixing up something else?
At the moment, the only benefit of drive-by-wire that I can see is automatic idle adjustment to prevent stalling when creeping/cruising at low speeds without having to ride the clutch. Granted, I'm OK with lots of clutch action to regulate it myself, but a more aggressive spring plate may be in my near future and that could become a nuisance. I suspect that the DFCO jerk would also become much more pronounced when slamming the butterfly closed, no?
Either way, I'd love to participate in developing/prototyping this system.

That would be a blessing. I cannot BELIEVE manufacturers have gone to the wire actuated system given its obvious problems. It does not give positive throttle control. In tight manuvering situations this could cause an accident.
I can think of traffic situations where it could cause an accident.
That the government, with all its "safety" laws like airbags, ABS etc hasnt made the manufacturers stop making an obviously defective feature is hard to understand. :iono:

I'm pretty sure it all has to do with stability control. The car has to have the ability to over-ride driver inputs.

How different is a cable-driven throttle to a DBW with a throttle controller? I think the latter is better because I get to tweak the sensitivity depending on traffic conditions...

All I can say is drive an ECHO. It doesnt need tweaking.

Seriously rear view cameras do anything for safety? I mean shouldnt you look behind you and proceed cautiously?
Also it if frequently the front wheels that run over kids with the car backing up. They will run around spastically like kids do out of the picture of the camera.

Man, I totally understand... :frown:
I went from a cable operated throttle body on my 1996 Tacoma (just like the Echo) to the drive by wire on my 2012 Tacoma and the difference is night and day. I really miss the immediate positive linearity of the old cable system. And it was immediate in both directions on and off the pedal.

My throttle controller really minimized the lag to the point that it's basically imperceptible... Plus I get to increase said lag to help with fuel economy when the tank's almost empty.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for trying out new things... But is it really better not to have the option to adjust throttle response based on different conditions?

Does it also minimize the lag when you let off the throttle? Do the revs drop off quickly? I might go for one if it did that.

I got mine one (not installed yet), because I just don't see how much space is left around the bumper, and jumping out several times while parking is a pain in the a§§ ;)

I second how throttle controller, really minimizes throttle lag, its near instantaneous, and the option to make it MORE laggy for mpg concerns is good too.
However, not to knock throttle controllers, my NTD one developed "Limp mode" issues, and throwing CEL for like throttle position voltage too low or something along those lines, meaning the car, just says, "throttle is giving weird signals, better just disregard what its tell the engine to do" Least limp is much safer than uncontrolled acceleration.

You should check that the power cables aren't shorting out on you. I had to resolder mine a few weeks ago. Hopefully that will fix your issue.

Does that mean open up the control box? Ill take a look at all solder points when i put it back in the car tomorrow.

Nope, I'm talking about the power cables that get connected to the OBD port. I was getting limp mode every time I pressed the clutch pedal and it turned out that the power cable got tangled up a bit.

That's what a lightweight flywheel does. And a pulley, too. :wink:

That explains the clicking sounds (same sound the box makes when changing modes) when I gently tug on the cables. Thank for the tech tip
