I've been loking at in-dash nav/cd/dvd for a while and it seems most are pretty expensive expet for JVC(which cnet.com rated as best buy). I dont really like JVC but I think with all options and price compared I would go with the Poineer AVIC N3. Check it out or just wait a while for prices to drop cause I dont think they are selling too well since they are pushed for the normal consumer.

The pioneers arent really that expensive relative to other brand name units. For comparison check out the Eclipse AVN6610 or the 5510. Almost double the price although even I will admit they are overkill for the Yaris at full retail price.

pioneers are the best bang for the buck. plus the color customization and the visualization on the avic d3 is freekin great. if you gots a little more money, eclipses sound slightly better (higher preamp voltage), and in my opinion have a really nice navi layout (pioneer is a little too cluttered for my taste). but it probably isnt worth the extra money (around 400 more). alpine navis had GREAT visuals, but i dont think they make them anymore and they were CRAZY expensive...

I plan on getting the Garmin Nuvi 660 or 650 portable gps. They 660 goes for about $650 and the 650 goes for about $550. I plan on putting it in the drivers glovebox, and just closing the glovebox when ever I park. So there will be no evidence. If your interested you can check them out at Garmin.com.

Wait until may (depending where you live). By crazy expensive you are probably talking about Alpines $1800 or so dvd based navi add on to the already pricey touch screens. There is a new Blackbird that actually docks inside a new IVA W200 double din. Around the same price as the Eclipse AVN6610 when you purchase the units separately, but the cool thing is that the Blackbird remains portable. Just undock it and carry it with you. The Eclipse AVN series are the best I've played with so far. The only complaint is that the iPod interface functioned a bit slow.

i agree. we're waiting for prices to dip, but we're getting the avn 5510. excellent sound quality, and the navi layout is very logical, IMO. the pioneers are a great bargain though. the best feature i found with the old alpine systems was how the touchscreen actually gave a physical alert of being touched. when you touched a button on the screen, that part of the screen actually physically "clicked" like a button. but yeah, me and the wifey are big fans of the toyota/lexus/eclipse navi interfaces...

I have a Nuvi 310, it's the older, non-widescreen version of the 6-series, they're very good little units. You should use the windscreen mount so that it's easier to see when you are using it, and driving around with the glovebox open is a bit weird. Then you can very easily detach it and hide it in your glove box when you park.

But I gotta admit, the Pioneer AVIC-D3 looks just so sweet... Navigation is probably useless here if they don't have Thailand maps, but just for the looks (and red lighting), I may swap mine out

WOW! hahaha, the man does speak the truth. just remember that most warranties on these units require you to purchase them from an authorized retailer, so be careful if you do go the flea market/internet route. good luck shopping!

It sounds a little weird to drive with the glovebox open, but I have tried it and I dont even notice it. Having the windshield mount is a magnet to thieves. I just got used to the Navi in my Civic, so I'm hooked on NAvi now. I heard Garmin is coming out with a 5inch Nuvi late in the Year, :iono: maybe I'll wait for that.

the man speaks the truth. the only way to avoid getting hooked on navi is to never get it. everyone i know who got navi for one car, eventually got it for all their other cars. the moment we installed the toyota oem navi in our sienna, we knew the yaris would be getting a similar eclipse set-up in the near future. damn technology!

I just got a Garmin StreetPilot c580. Fits nicely in the driver glovebox. I dont' use it there though. I got a ProClips center mount for my liftback (even though it's only listed for the sedan on their site, it works on the lfitback though) + the RAM Mounts mount for the c580. Works very well. I'll try to post pics. tomorrow.

easiest way, go to the full reply page (i.e. click the "go advanced" button below the quick reply box), and near the bottom, you'll see an option to add attachments. Use this, and it will automatically upload and display your pictures in your reply.

I prefer a Garmin with the self adhesive mount. I just stick it behind the steering wheel. I can see the screen above the steering wheel. I have a 7 inch Garmin in my first Yaris. The 7 inch screen Garmin is easy to read. The 7 inch Garmin is expensive. I have the 4.2 inch screen Garmin nuvi 255WT in my second Yaris. Screen harder to read. The 4.2 inch Garmin is a lot more affordable. I use a window reflector to help hide the navigation system from thieves. The truck size works best. Overhang makes it harder for thieves to look inside the car. The folding truck reflector keeps my first Yaris a lot darker inside. Those wire frame reflectors fit better in the window but do not darken my second Yaris enough.

I had a after market in-dash navigation system in my old Ranger with a back up camera. Back up camera was not reliable. In the dash with back up camera is the most expensive option.

Garmin intended their large screen devices (like the Nuvi 5000 and 1490T) for RVs and trucks. They do look cool though in our tiny Yarii.

Here's my Nuvi 765t:
