See this from the NY Times:
■ According to a report from Cars.com, the average transaction price for vehicles sold in the United States in January declined 1.2 percent since January 2013, to $29,882. The average transaction price has fallen 3.3 percent since December 2013, the report said. (The Wall Street Journal)
A Yaris in NJ out the door tax included is $20,000 or more.

I guess it depends on the definition of average car..
People are buying less new cars and smaller cars at the same time. When you look at an average, you have to think about the upper end of them too.
Cars are going to be more expensive year to year. The only exception to this I know is when hybrids got popular or electric vehicles.

Got my Yaris for around $16,000 in 2010. Cars are so friggin' expensive. For me, a new car purchase is a major life event. Some people who have money to throw away look at buying a new car as if it's nothing, and that's okay. If you have it to spend, that's great. But for me, I couldn't sleep properly for the next three weeks after I bought my car because I hate debt. It's stressful, and I don't think I'm the only one who feels this way. And one of the reasons I like my Yaris is because it's so simple. They can keep all these cars with the fancy gadgets that jack up the price of a car to $30,000+, like Bronis noted. I'll be driving my Yaris until the wheels fall off, and that's a fact.....

I only paid $6,800 for my 07 yaris back in 2010. it had 58,000 miles on it. I got such a good deal I think I could break even today with 93,000 miles on it now.
