squealing belt, but a different question

Ok, I have read over and over about the startup squeal of the Yaris belt when it is cold.

I have put on a new Bando belt, but it still squeals. I read that you need to ensure the pulleys are dry and clean before installation of the new belt so as to ensure nothing is helping it slip.

My question is whether it is ok to use brake cleaner, sparingly, to clean off any residue from the pulleys (belt removed already of course).

Thoughts?

I've been having this same issue on my 41k miles old Yaris. I turn the keys, & as SOON as the car's started I let go of 'em, yet the squeak still persists, though mostly only when it's cold outside or the car hasn't been cranked in like half a day & has cooled down.

Methinks it's coming from the belts, so I'll have to check it out.

Cleaning the pulleys is not a bad idea, in case a bit of oil got dripped from a prior oil change. If the belt is properly tensioned, but still squeals, that could indeed be the problem.

Brake cleaner would be fine if you sprayed it on a rag, rather than spraying it on the pulleys (where it could end up where it should not be). I typically use denatured alcohol for that type of cleaning.

I would go with OEM toyota belt and to get right tension requires a use of a pry bar makes sure you wrap the pry bar with the cloth and pry it against the engine mount.

Bando is an OEM belt for Toyota, if I remember correctly...
