Manual here, ....getting tired of it since traffics here is so bad. Took me 1 hour and 30 minutes to get home instead of 15 minutes without traffics.

I could not think of a more fitting punishment from hades than having a manual while sitting in the cluster that is my daily Atlanta commute.

Manual! The only way to drive.

And if you guys think your traffic is bad, you've never been in Bangkok.

I love "authomatics"! They can do your homework for you!

Sorry, cheap shot at a spelling error, couldn't resist!

I have an auto, but not by choice. When I bought mine last July the dealer only had a auto, and the gf can't drive a stick. Would have gotten a manual, but the closest two in the country were in Alaska and Montana. They wanted $2,000 more for the alaskan one, and $1,000 more for the Montanan one.

I've had both on this car. I enjoy the manual so much more; it's quite a bit more frugal and gives more control.

A few manual drivers think it makes you cooler but it's really just personal preference. Automatics do have a higher resale value if thats important to you. Also, for an automatic transmission, this one shifts nice and overall works very well.

it's a question of habit and of tradition...
in italy we don't use authomatic.
it's not usual to find an authomatic car
we have a lot of trafic but we prefer the manual gear...maybe we are crazy!

Mine is auto, my girlfriend tried to convince me to get a manual since there were 6 on the lot but I don't know how to drive manual and the few times I've tried to learn haven't gone well. In Tucson the manual are much more popular than the auto, I had a hard time finding an auto but there were lots of choices if I had gone manual.

I say automatics. Mine were. However by the time I was in driver's ed I had already learned to drive a stick. My sister can...poorly. My brother cant at all (but he isnt a great driver period) I am the only one that made it a point to learn and learn fast.

I went to driving school in Texas and were were taught to drive on an auto. I don't know if it's different in other parts of the US.

My driving school was on auto been driving auto ever since then. First time ever to drive a manual was when I bought this car and I don't think I will ever switch back. I love it. I just jumped in the car and knew how to drive it. I did kill it for about a week at red lights but after that I was golden. :) I LOVE MY YARIS HAHA

Pfffft. Trolling huh? I'll bite. As a manual driver I must say it *is* cooler. Besides that tho, manual drivers will always drive manual transmissions for several reasons. 1) way better gas mileage -- dealerships will try to say otherwise cause they don't stock them often. 2) control over the engine. If you don't drive a manual then you wouldn't understand what that means under slippery conditions or under unusual driving conditions. 3) reliability. Automatics *will* be in poor condition after 10 years or so. Manuals just don't wear out -- assuming you know how to drive a stick. 4) Resale Value. Take a poll of manual drivers; we would gladly pay extra for a manual transmission -- and as someone who has bought and sold cars. . .people will certainly go out of their way (and pay more) in order to get a manual, for all of the above reasons.

Finally, you're suffering from "stick envy." Stick envy is a Freudian psychoanalysis that refers to the reaction of an automatic driver during their psycho-mobile development to the realization that they do not have a stick. Freud considered this realization a defining moment in the development of driving for automatic owners.

Colloquially, an automatic driver really wants to become a manual driver, so that they can control other automatic drivers. Sad really. Be secure friend.

Hell no. The good 'ol USA is an automatic driving country. Even the few of us that still do drive manuals don't know how to do it properly. Just check the forums for awhile. I've seen people advocate not engine breaking -- and a lot of people I've seen drive manuals don't do this. Automatics, at least, down shift for you. But coasting in neutral with the clutch engaged is hard on the transmission and breaks -- and poor practice -- besides dangerous. Breaks can overheat and fail doing things like that. Manual driving is a bit of a lost art in the USA -- with the exemption of truckers I suppose.

I live in the city. I am not sure if you have ever seen or been in a real city but driving a manual isn't so "cool" in stop and go. I hit about 20 lights on the way to work and drive in traffic the whole way in town. No stick envy here bud. I am not knocking anyone who prefers a stick but -not- my choice. My Mom for example prefers manual transmission. Some people feel they have more control over the engine. You can also control the engine with something called a gas pedal. You drive like a dumbass then sure your gas mileage will suffer either way.

Don't come to Yaris World with a shit attitude.

Real city? I've driven in Oklahoma city, Dallas, Salt Lake City, and Indianapolis amongst others-- all of which are in the top ten big cities and known for shitty traffic -- never drove in Atlanta tho -- that one I understand has some real problems. But I digress. Obviously pseudo-Freudian humor is lost on you.

I've driven both, but my yaris is an auto.

My thoughts are if I have to get by with one-legged driving for whatever reason, I'm good to go.

Besides, as far as cost & breakdown, I've never had any problems with an auto tranny, but I've spent a small fortune on clutches, pressure plates & throw-out bearings.

I've got an auto in my boat-puller SUV, but I much prefer a manual for my daily driver. Granted, I'm not in a city, and a few miles of downshifting into the curves and down the hills on the way to work is much more fun than a city commute with a clutch. Depends a lot on one's environment, for sure.

I got the slushbox (auto) for my wife. I've tried several times with a few cars to teach her standard but it's a lost cause. I prefer standard and will buy one whenever I get a chance. I learned to drive stick on this: http://www.fastforward.ca/gallery/sm1003iltis.jpg

Different trannys for different uses, auto for mud bogging trucks, manual for tow rigs, auto for drag racing consistency, manual for autocross/roundy-round racing.
Old farts like me think people should know how to use both, no matter which you prefer, people in Kansas should know how to swim, just in case.

auto. why choose to drive with two hands and two feet when you can get it done with one hand and foot? this way i have a hand free to roll down a window (yes, i have manual windows! don't laugh!), talk on my cell, or just to scratch an itch!

but here in italy you cannot use free hand to talk with cell...it's forbidden!!! :iono:

Its a good thing to have both automatic, and manual. Thank god I have two cars :bellyroll: I hate driving manual in to much traffic especially on my work days and college. I usually drive my Camry(auto). For weekends when I want to get out the house its the yaris 5 speed.

Mine is manual--had to go to "big city" to get as local dealer had only A/T on lot.

Dealers around here do NOT do the special order thing-- I had to go to Atlanta for previous car...

I made the decision for an Auto because of city traffic. I love manuals in sports cars, but a stick in a Yaris would just get downright annoying after a while. My Lotus Elise, on the otherhand, will be a stick guaranteed! hehe I've heard people complaining about the feel fo the Yaris stick being slow in gear changes or something... My auto is as smooth and a babys bottom! Sounds like a little auto envy going on around here...

One of the good things about choosing the Auto in the case of the Yaris is that there is only very little loss in terms of fuel economy. Please see Post #1100 for a detailed comparison in the Fuel Economy thread here - http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?p=74955#post74955.
The same may not be true of other makes and models.

well I must admit autos do have an advantage of smooth shifts. As smooth as I try to be when changing gears, I just hate to see the passenger's head move forward then back again. But it's getting better, I can sometimes do some half-throttle shifts without overrevving that are quick and smooth as butter

Seriously i miss my (auto) pathfinder, but when i drove a Yaris Manual it's feel more like a car, and CRUISE is way better than Auto.
Best thing is i can slide my car back and forth at the red light. or when i'm in a trance mood, feel really good.

Auto, and I still feel like a man,and a less stressfull one at that.Auto's get just as good gas milage as a stick,on the Yaris platform anyway.
Ohya etimago, some of the roads here in ga are just plain stupidly designed, traffic jams everwhere in metro atlanta, you dont wanne be driving any where from 6:00-9:30am,10:30am-1:00pm,3:30-8:00pm,thats just fucking crazy.

mine is manual  i have to say i drive automatic and manuals cars all day being an acura technician, and its a hell of a lot more fun driving manual. yes traffic sucks... i commute from NJ to NY every morning. but its still the best for me. its usefull in having the ability to downshift for more power to accelerate past traffic or to slow the car down with out killing your brake pads. my project car is an ae86 that is nothing but fun to drift in at the track or a an empty parking lot. which is something that cant be enjoyed with an automatic tranny. and if anyone here is familiar with autocrossing or drifting then you would know how usefull "heel toe" is when entering the corners.
but... everyone has their preferences. i just say if you havnt learned yet, definitly do so you might really enjoy it

i appreciate my auto everytime I sit in traffic, and just let my foot rest while I idly cruise along attempting to not hit the brakes or the gas.

I also appreciate it when I have a bunch of shat in the car, and have to uncomfortably sit up on the steering wheel... i'd never be able to shift comfortably in this situation.

More than anything, my sz 14 feet + big legs wont agree with any clutch pedal placements I've seen yet... very uncomfortable.

But, yes, on those lonely nights cruising around... I wish I had a manual :). Stick-envy prevails.
