Hi folks,

I have a 2012 Yaris (UK spec)

I need 2 12v 1Amp switched supplies for 2 dash cams - one up front, the other in the rear. Please suggest where I can tap the power from? I have a USB in the glove box which currently the ipod is connected to. Thanks

Do you have a normal key or the smart entry system?

Norma key. it's a TR spec with touch and go. I was considering tapping the wire leading to the USB connector for the front. I don't mind rnning some power cabling from the front to the back, but if there was a ready 12V switched supply in the boot (trunk) area, it'd save on wiring.

Also, just out of interest, what is the maximum current available at the USB? The actual dash cams need 5V at 1amp, if I can use a 3 way USB splitter that would save on splicing power cables - 2xUSB for the dash cams and 1Xfor the iPod

I doubt that the USB port can source much more than 1A.

On the front end your best source for 12 Volt switched power is the pink wire on the ignition switch connector. That circuit has at least 5A of available power feed.

At the boot, there unfortunately isn't an ignition switched power source.

The lighter power feed would be fine as well.

For the ignition switch you have to remove the lower steering column cover. There are two screws that you expose by turning the steering wheel in one direction and then the other and a third down by the tilt lever.

Really appreciate your help. Thank you so much. What is the best way to access the lighter power feed?

You should be able to get to it by removing the radio. See the thread below for a good DIY on getting the radio out:
