Spare tire still useable???

A friend of mine told me that after changing from stock(steelies) to bigger aftermarket rims (Konig Feathers 17x7) my sparetire is pretty much useless.

Is that true??? If so am I SOL when I get a flat?

i don't see why it would be useless, maybe you just have to be extra careful since the overall diameter of the Konig's are larger than the OEM steelies.

i do wish a full size spare fit back there like in my Golf but the donut is fine, you won't be driving on it long anyway

May want to keep a set of stock lugs with your spare....something to check out if your new wheels got different types of lugs.

Don't forget it's best to put the spare on the rear. If you get a front flat, put a rear on the front, then replace the rear with the spare. You don't have to do this but it is better for your tranny.

Exactly, and be sure to keep two socket sizes or two lug wrenches if the lug nuts are different sizes. I carry a breaker bar and socket for the lugs on my aftermarket rims, and left the stock lug wrench in the car for the spare tire lugs.

If you've chose your aftermarket rms and tires wisely, and the overall diamter remains the same, or very close to the stock wheels, no problem.

Good point about keeping spare lugs as well, I'll have to check that myself, it would suck to not be able to attach the spare properly!

most tuner lugs used on aftermarket wheels work just as well as the stock lugs, so there is no need to keep the stock lugs in most cases, long as your aftermarket lugs have a bulge seat, and not a shank you will be fine... again it all depends if you had stock steelies or aluminum, cause Toyota uses shank lugs on aluminum wheels and bulge seats on steel

Good preventative info here. If you can, put the spare on the rear if you have a front flat tire, as it is better for the differential. If you can't don't worry about it too much.

If you have "tuner" style lugs they will work fine with the spare donut. Just make sure you have tht capability to REMOVE the tuner lugs in the event of a flat. I have splinedrive lugs and the key for them fits in the breaker bar that came in the tool bag.
