Have a 2012 White SE. The hatchback is rusting all along the chrome strip above the license plate. Is anyone else having an issue? Its obviously holding water hence the rust.

Thanks

I'll have to verify tomorrow, but I'm pretty sure I've got a few rust spots in the same area on my 2012.

Around the license plate, can you take a picture ? I have to check mine, maybe I overlooked that spot, considering the winter has been so cold, with only the odd warm days.

Sorry, I was mistaken. I looked this morning and I couldn't find any rust spots on the chrome. I did find a few small rust spots on the sheet metal to either side of the license plate, however.

Are these little tiny flecks of rust in the paint?

If so, this happens on all cars, but you can actually see it on white cars. A claybar will remove it. I've owned four white cars, and they all get this. It's often referred to as environmental fallout.

However, if it's not this, I got nothin'. :D

Thank you. I'm not sure: I'll have to look a bit closer after work. Is this just "junk" from the road that embeds itself in the paint?

There is a TSB in Europe regarding this issue with a specific repair procedure to follow to ensure the rust once repaired does not return.

The fault is a chemical reaction between the chrome coating on the trim and the fixing holes on the tailgate, the modification involves repairing the tailgate and fitting a modified trim along with insulators between the two. The UK bulletin ref is BO-0086T-1213

Yes. Unless this is something more than just environmental fallout. Could you post a pic?

Wow. My 2005 xB (in 2006) was rusting at a door weld on the driver's side. A number of other owners had the same issue.

Does Quebec use salt on its roads?

Yep, we use salt here. So far, no weld is rusting on my 07. And garage parking it did not help (heat and salt makes a big mess)

I removed the chrome trim to clean the area and protect it a little bit from rusting more. It's not bothering me much since my car is not the cleanest anyways..

White Yarii develop rust easily

I see no evidence that this is a widespread problem or unique to the yaris. ive looked at (literally) hundreds of used yaris, including private party, over the past 7-8 years. ive seen no rust issues and this is in the upper Midwest where we use tons of salt.

obviously, the folks posting here have this problem, (which is the nature of threads discussing a particular issue) but I see no evidence in the real world that yaris rust easily.

the 07 yaris I sold is 8 yrs old (from manufacture date), and has not a spec of rust. my brother has a pair of 08 sedans, and likewise not a spec.

dip1, thanks for posting the pictures. My white 2012 Yaris L has similar rust, but not as bad as yours. When I get an oil change this spring, I'll ask about warranty coverage on the rust spots.

The chrome on the front air dam is rust colored too. I need to wash it next couple of days and really look the car over. There probably is more somewhere else...

There's rust coverage that comes with the car like that of the bumper to bumper and powertrain . Should be at no cost .

dip - You are most likely still under warranty, they will fix that, whether it's replacing the body or whatever they will fix. Do it now before your warranty expires.

The corrosion warranty usually specifies "perforation" or "rust through" and Id be surprised if a cursory detailing and touch-up isnt all they do for it at this point.

Given the OP's location, (and judging from the pictures) acccumulated dirt, including what is likely "road salts", aren't helping matters.

Washing your car regularly year-round especially ones that get used in "rust belt" states where they DO salt the roads, and have dirty rain is more important in the winter months for this very reason.

I know it seems silly to wash a car when snow-ice-rain-crappy weather as much as guaranteed, but doing so is actually more a preventative measure than a cosmetic one.

The old saying "a clean car lasts longer" comes to mind.

^this. I wash my cars regularly, especially in the winter. most of my cars ive kept 10 year and 200,000 miles and always end up with very minimal rust.

In this case, it really depends on the dealer. My sedan trunk lid had similar rust.. and also under the license plate, and they repainted it under warranty.

I found rust the size of my pinky finger nail, within the back headlight area, you can't see it, unless you look real close. The rust is light brown, I believe it still can be removed. The problem is finding something that can remove the rust.

This winter has been real brutal, especially the extreme cold temps, first time in a long time I inspected most of the car, car door hinges etc. Since this rust spot is small, best to remove it while it remains small.

Any suggestions for a rust removal product ? Toyota won't do nothing on this rust spot since it's not visibly noticeable, I don't even have to ask, I know from a mechanic at the dealer.

I just wanted to followup that, during my oil change this morning, I had the service manager look at the rust spots that had formed on my 2012 Yaris L hatch. I have rust similar to the OP, but not as bad. The service manager took some pictures and will send them off to regional (?) for the okay, but he said they should be able to cover the rust repair under warranty, no problem.

You need to just take care of it better.....but hindsight 20/20 cause once the rust starts your gonna have problems from now on.

2012 as well, just showing signs of rust above the license plate

As a follow up to this post, Toyota covered the sanding and repainting of my hatch this week. There was about 5 pin sized rust spots, and a lot behind the license plate. Apparently there was nothing under the chrome trim piece.
