Ok.. So I am infatuated with the new Yaris, Particularly with the TRD 18" wheels and lowering kit but my wife thinks the Yaris is basically a Dorky little ride. I am trying my best to persuade her but 40mpg only goes so far.. Some smart 1 liners about why the Yaris is great would be appreciated

Now that my wife is sharing her TRUE feelings on the Yaris I am also wondering if anyone else felt a tad bit GEEKY for liking the Yaris? I mean even a little ? ?

Bitch, NOT EVEN FOR A SECOND!!!!

I LOVED the uniqueness of it, the beauty of its interior, ESPECIALLY the dash area! Love all the space and compartments! Loved the blue "dots" in the thread (which so well accented my bayou blue exterior), LOVE the shape of the body adn loved the rear end (and you know how much I love yalls Muranos rear end, so you know how important the appearance of the car's tail is to me ;)) ...

Cuz you gotta get this (if you really want it and get past these doubts of your own)!

You'd have SO much fun in it! Wait till you test drive the liftback! You'll fall in love, i promise! I know you bitch! Trust me.

The way it hugs the road, its surprising peppiness (something which i never found to be true in the Echo), the "uniqueness" of it which will still get you looks (the good kind, if just not as many as you get in ur FJ Cruiser) and ull grow to love it!

 seriously mcnabb, test it first before missy convinces you that you wont like it and ull think ur dorky in it!

YARIS FTW!
Serious.

EDIT:

And since yall have two vehicles, Missy has her FJ Cruiser and shes uber happy, so know you need your new vehicle which you will love. I dont think you should NOT get it because she doesnt like it... unless you come to realise and see things as she does... just make sure YOU love your new vehicle whatever it is. if you love it and you're driving it, it shouldnt matter if she doesnt, since ull be the one driving it :)

Go with the gut i say!

Take her for a test drive...Most doubters who get inside the car and feel the way it feels/handles like a much bigger car have been converted...

D-I-V-O-R-C-E *teasing*

most of my friends thought i was crazy at first... until they booted around town in it... theres a whole new level of appreciation when you actually experience. Its peppy, looks cool, its surprisingly roomy, gets great mileage, gets a lot of stares, easy to park, fun to drive and its evironmentally responsible. It just makes sense!!!

As always looks can be deceiving. To me, my friend's Chevy Avalanche looks "dorky", but I guess it gets the job done (at an incredible cost) for her. If someone has made up their mind that the Yaris is a dorky car, you can only hope that a test drive will bring them around. Unfortunately some people have closed minds about what a car should be or look like, and nothing will change their opinion.

I agree, it is definitely simplicity at its B E S T

I am taking the wife to the big city for a test ride this Monday (None of the local dealers has any in stock). This to me will be the make it or break it. I think she will come around to it in the end but all the negative comments from friends down here has me second guessing myself. People aren't being right out mean or anything but when I show them the car they are like.. "It kinda looks like an egg" or they will flip the hand out in a girly manner... if you know what I mean.. (NOT THAT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT:biggrin: )

I'm guessing your wife doesn't want you to get a yaris cause she's afraid women will be all over you.

I will have to present your assumptions to her.. I never thought of it that way.. could be a definite possibility

That is something a dork would say !

Good point, I will have to check into how much the wheel size affects the mpg

It just makes sense!!!

Well I will update about my situation after the test ride this Monday and if ll else fails I might have to resort to action and take birdy's advice

Yeah man, I'm in the same boat. My wife hates pretty much all small cars (except a Mini Cooper, go figure)... she's a truck gal. Almost had to twist her arm to make her stop driving her 4x4 extended cab Chevy to work and buy a Hyundai Tuscon (which she still considers too small!). Her parents have brainwashed her... at one point, each of them drove a freakin' Suburban, and all the kids were already out of the house!

That said, I don't care what she likes when it comes to MY car. She doesn't have a leg to stand on when arguing against the practicality and price of purchasing a Yaris. When it comes time, I'll get whatever the hell I want, so long as it's financially feasible.

Yeah! That's right! *flexing all manly-like*

Tell her she should be glad you are not spending the life-savings on a friggin' SUV, half of that money goes to gas.

Seriously, be a man and stand up for what you think. I didn't mean to bring any arguement to a marrage, but heck, I am sure all of us here should give you enough bullet to fire back!

Haha thats hilarious, pretty much sums up the area I live in..

Seriously, be a man and stand up for what you think.

Man up Huh? good advice, when it comes down to it I know I will be happy with the car but I respect what my wife thinks of the vehicle.. I dont want it to be something where she doesent want to be seen with me in it or anything.. not that she would be like that.. actually I think if I would just "be a man" and buy the Yaris she would dig it after awhile.. but she is definitely trying to detour me from getting it at this point! !

Its reliable, roomy, great gas milage, and if i wanted to pimp it out it wouldnt cost to much in "our" pockets.

I like the way you think:thumbsup:

Thanks for the thoughts guys, hopefully this test ride will ride her and myself of any doubts !!!

Definatly the money angle is the way to go. Since you have mentioned that she drives a FJ Cruiser, tell her the money you save on gas can be used so she can drive that gas hog.

I've actually never met anyone that didn't say the Yaris is cute. No one has made any other comments. They all say the same thing. Almost makes me think it is a conspiracy.

Spouse and family are there to give you OPINIONS but once you weigh all the opinions the decision should be YOURS and nobody else. However if your parents and/or relatives are giving you the money, all bets off.....

Well today was "Supposed" to be the day that the Yaris was going to come into our lives in a big way... (or so I had hoped) to make a long story short we didn't even make it to the toyota dealership... we stopped at Carmax and literally bought the first car we saw. After all this talk of my wife thinking the Yaris is dorky she ended up getting a Volkswagen Beetle convertible, the reason I say she ended up with it is because she wanted the beetle so bad I decided to make a H U G E sacrifice and humbly took driving rights of the FJ.

Anyways the beetle is a stick shift and is cobalt blue and tan leather interior. I don't normally like beetles at all but this one is very becoming.. anyways maybe I will get a yaris when the trim levels move up a little (electronic dashes and all).

I rode around in at 14mpg car. I have had many cars in my short life as a driver. I grew up with a ford van due to my mothers disability, then I had a plymoth horizon. After that it was my choice as a nanny to use either a 15 seat van, suburbon, or a ford explorer. I loved the Explorer when I had just the little ones with me. I then met my husband and he owned a Jeep Wrangler. 14 mpg on a good day, only going downhill in san fransisco. Now I own a Yaris. A cute compact car with lots of potential.

First it smiles at me when I walk up to it. Second I get noticed driving down the street. Third, no one on my block or for that matter in my town owns one yet.
4th with all the money saved on gas I can go on a cruise and afford payments and insurance.

Cute factor, this car outside sits higher then most cars of its class, it has a smile on all of the time, and it is earth friendly.
MY yaris has all of 200 miles on it. and I already know I am going to be doing some slight mods to it when the parts get on the market.

Ok so finished rambling enjoy your day. I am going to take my Yaris out for a drive.

The day after I bought my yaris i drove it over to a friends house to show it off and go out to lunch. As I drove up I noticed the car in front of me was a red lotus convertible. And they wound up parking across the street. I got out and the two guys in the lotus came over and started asking me questions about my yaris. They were just gushing over it. Asking me all sorts of questions. I found that kind of interesting with thier big interest in my yaris considering they were driving a 100,000 thousand dollar car.

I don't fell dorky at all for loving my Yaris other than it's a little different (center cluster, hiding little aux glovebox, cupholder location,) all of which I think are very cool. The style of this thing I believe really rocks, and all the intrest it attracts. At 38+ mpg I just tell people it's my four wheel covered motorcycle.

There are two main reasons I picked the yaris. The 40 miles to the gallon was a big one. But the car's reliability and how well its built was number #2. I read that the echo was actually the best built car in the last 10 years. The most relible. Less repairs ect.. . Considering the yaris is just about the same car except with a few changes I thought that a big plus. I was pleasantly suprised at the looks. Its a pretty cute looking car.

After driving it for the first week I'd buy my yaris all over again over any other car. To me its the most practicaly built car to date. And thats what I wanted. The most user freindly practical car in the world. Thats my yaris.

Fortunately, my wife thinks it's "cute"...but don't feel too bad though....my daughters call mine the "clown car", which instantly "stuck".

I've always owned Corvettes and Cadillacs and I currently have an '04 SSR, so I kinda know what you mean by feelin a little geeky, but hey, let em say what they want. If you were a young single guy, I don't think you'd impress too many women with your Yaris but being a married guy, it almost shows good sense (as long as you've got something classy to take out the missus with on Saturday night).

Anyway, I agree with one of the first responders. Take her for a ride in it. She will see that the Yaris has a heart of gold. SO far, every single person who has balked at how tiny it is, sits in it (front or back seat, doesn't matter) and comments on how much room they have. It pulls well, even with 4 people in it, and has a lot of cargo space when the back seats are put down. I can only speak for the LB on this one.

the 'dorkmobile' reference would only pertain to the hatch... the sedan is very ordinary looking

Dorky? It could have been worst, you might have gotten the Smart Car. If that doesn't work. You could always let the facial hair grow in, put on a wife-beater t-shirt and tell her you're thinking about getting a Harley bike.

Has anyone seen that stupid Hummer ad on TV? A guy is buying healthy food at supermarket, like broccoli, tofu,etc.....guy behind him in line is buying tons of meat; he goes to local dealer and buys a Hummer "to get his manhood back" (I guess ?); Is this shit for real? What the ad doesnt say is that the guy behind him in line at supermarket (who is supposed to be envied) will die of heart disease at 50 and our protagonist Hummer-driver will spend the next 10 years driving from gas station to gas station (or, worse, if Middle east stays on present course we will all be in hybrids or Yarii in 5--10 years); are Americans really this dumb and unconcerned about environment, their resepective health and the oncoming geopoitical war over oil (WWIII ???); Come ON!!! I belive Yaris owners are a new wave of consumers who will eventually become the norm; I truly believe we will look back in shame on Hummers and SUV's as terrorist-funding death machines and Yarii and their ilk as saviors; what do you think ?

i think it will take consistent $4-5 a gallon gas if not more for our mindset to become the norm. what do you think the oil companies are saying right now? executive: "look at these suckers, they're still sucking it down and we're charging 50% more than we did 18 months ago, the sky is the F'in limit!"

We're trading in our honda element for the yaris - i'm going to miss it very much it was extremely versatile and great for camping, moving, you name it. but to me, even 22mpg is not good enough, i'm glad my first car was a honda civic CX manual tranny! you start missing 40mpg pretty fast when gas is $3 a gallon.

in a few years maybe i'll pick up an old element for $6-8K, and use it solely for trips and if we have a short commute...the yaris will be for absolutely everything else!
