The thread about Why You Don't Want A "Smart" Key (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50383) got me thinking...I don't recall anyone on this forum ever reporting a Yaris being stolen. Has it happened? :iono:

The closest I could find was JohnnyRockets' car almost being stolen last year (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45471).

Back in 2009, the Yaris ranked 79th out of 230 vehicles for theft (source (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36890)), but you'd think if it were happening that much, we'd hear about it in this forum (such as we do accidents).

I'm not talking about vehicle break-ins, I mean actual theft of the car!

Cheers! M2

p.s. I further found one instances in Riyadh back in 2009 here (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33228), but my language skills don't extend to be able to read that thread! :bonk:

p.s.s. OK, I found another instance back in 2011 (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32634), another from 2009 (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4699), and a third form 2007 (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1588) (this one was a dozy! No insurance and it was taken by some stranger who he had given a ride to!); but it still seems to be a rare event!

The latest one had the data transmitter deliberately shut off on the smart key. They can't find the car but they believe it kept going down the freeway for 4 hours.

I sold an ignition switch assembly to a woman from Florida who's car was broken into, but they couldn't break the switch enough to release the steering lock.

I think having a manual transmission helps/is a deterrent . I can't remember if this was on Yarisworld or not, but I remember reading posts about people breaking into cars, and also people committing carjackings, where the perpetrators (both types) couldn't complete their objective. They couldn't close the deal because the vehicles in question had manual transmissions, and they didn't know how to drive them .

why?

That is a per capita list, not an overall list. Only 93 Yaris were stolen in 2009. That is less than two per state.

Oh, and how to disguise it? Park it next to something really expensive in the lot, any real thieves won't even see it.

I'm actually surprised it's that many!

Old military trick. Never look important. It makes you sniper-bait! :eyebulge:
