This is a new one to me.
On another forum a few people swear that using a oil designed for diesel
gives better protection in a gas engine.
I can't find any info on this.
Anyone know about this?

If you look at any of the 5w30 Diesel engine oils they all say for diesel or gasoline engines. The diesel ones are more expensive as they are designed for longer service intervals. Basically it is like running Amsoil

Thanks Scott.
I would assume no benefit over Mobil 1 extended?

My bet is not enough of a difference to justify the cost.

Depending on what diesel oil you're talking about and also depending on what year model Yaris too.

Diesel oils (generally speaking) will have more anti-wear additives (like ZDDP) in them. Well, those same anti-wear additives can't be too plentiful because they will (negatively) impact your exhaust treatment devices (e.g. catalytic converter).

Take my 2008 Yaris for example. It's recommended to run a API SL 5W-30. I have been running an API SN (less ZDDP than SL) 5W-30 in there. I've been doing oil analysis on extended drain intervals (12,000-14,000 mile oil change intervals) and my wear metals barely register (at the absolute highest level, I've had 20 parts per million - 20:1,000,000). My wear metals have never been flagged abnormal and are considered in the 'normal' level.

What I'm getting at is there is no reason for you to run diesel oil in your car - in my opinion.

I'm an AMSOIL Dealer. If you'd like to try some, let me know. I can help you on cost. If you have other questions, feel free to throw them up here or PM me directly.
