Hello.
I own a 2004 Echo HB 3 Door Manual and today I was able to put my hands on a Cluster ( with RPM ) from a 2005 RS expecting it will be a pretty close to "Plug & Play" but I think I was wrong.
I've looked online but nothing came up really .
Plugs are physically the same but not the right stuff lights up when I plug it in.
Any idea if anyone has done this swap ?
Information is limited since this car was only available in Canada for 04-05 so looks like not many people has done that swap .
Anyone here has a clue when I can find some info regarding that swap ?
If it's too complicated it will be back up for sale.
It has 87,000KM and the seller gave me the 2 pigtails from the 05 with about 10" of wire and he had marked one wire that I had to take the signal from the Black wire on the OBDII port to get my tach signal and he also said maybe the Hi/Low beam indicator may not work unless you re wire it.

Thanks for your help.

Can you snap pictures of the wires on the connectors on your existing cluster and the ones on the pigtails on the new one? I believe I have the correct diagrams, but it helps to see the wire colors on the actual ones to verify.

I'll do that tonight.
Wiring diagram from a 2004 HB 2DR manual & one from a 2005 RS manual would be perfect.
Thanks for helping me.

It's a tad more complicated than swapping wires..
http://clubecho-yarisquebec.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=14505&hilit=tach#p152990
I have posted the wiring diagram with and without tach in that thread.
I would say a simple solution is a complete gut and harness/ECM swap.

Hello.
Talking about that forum.
I tried to register under mpcv2000 and I can't because somehow I may have clic that I was under 16 Y.O or so and I need to have my parent to sign for me or some like that I've wrote to the admin and never got a reply from them.
This was like 6 months ago.
Can you contact them for me ( same user name ) and because I'm not a member I can't see the link you posted here.
Thanks for your help.

LOL, there are no admins there.. we're kinda left out and is crap. sorry can't help.
but here are the diags... and also what happens with this is that you COULD get the tach to work, but the whole thing is not perfect with your current wiring. The guy who did the swap on the other forum gave up, because it also read the wrong speed (about 20kmh difference) but i think that's because it is AT vs MT.
enjoy!

I'm putting the stock cluster back until I can figure out which wire is what and I'll tap the 05 pigtail to the 04 so I'll have both in case if I have to put the 04 back in.
I'll look at the above pictures from the other member to see if I can figure out what is what.
I think it is doable.

From what I am seeing comparing the two sets of EWDs there are a lot of wires that need to move around. I also do see in the EPC that the speed sensors for the AT and MT have different part numbers, but the clusters are not shown as having different part numbers for MT vs AT.

That chart is exactly what I was doing for the comparison. Here is what I put together showing where everything moves. The only issue I see from the wiring is that the headlight indicator on the 05 has one wire from the headlight bulbs and one from the headlight switch whereas the 04 only has one wire from the headlight switch:

I haven't look at the diagram yet but the guy who sold me the cluster told me I had to change something because the Hi/Low beam light will not work.
He also identify for me the RPM wire that should connect to the Black wire on the OBDII port for RPM signal.

That's definitely at least a 3 beer job. I would take the pigtails and splice them to the existing wires. That way you can easily swap back and forth.

What means "EWD" and "EPC".
The only time I've mess with Toyota parts it is when I was working on my swapped RX7 (http://www.norotors.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=456a91904d5ed618b456e2e8070f88 11&topic=5409.15)

So it is that easy ?
Example:
I tap the White & Green from Connector C13 on the 2005 ( # 2 ) to White & Green on the 04 Pig Tail C13 ( # 2 ) and so on :iono:

R - Red
Y - Yellow
W - White

For RPM Signal is it right to say I tap the Black wire from the OBDII port to pig tail # 15 on the C13 Connector on the 2005 ?
As of Hi/Low Beam I just have to find the positive wire from the Hi/Low switch and send the signal to #15 on the C13 connector from the 2005 Pig Tail ?
If it is right I'll try to do that this week end.
Thanks a zillion times for helping me on this.

A big thank to CTScott who gave me all info and diagram to do that , without him I would have never been able to do that because I suck in electricity.
Your pin numbers were right on but there is some typo on some color on your chart so if someone else do that just follow the pins and connector's number and it will work at your 1st attempt.
I just have to wire the Hi/Low indicator and I'll take the cluster back off to remove the Blue indicator when the car is cold.
I had removed it on the 04 cluster. It is annoying.
I didn't take the car out but everything appears to be working.

05 w/tach color , pin numbers are right on.
04 w/o tach pin numbers are right on and the color should be the same as the 05 .
Don't forget that I have a Canadian car so it can be different than in the USA but every pin number you gave me on the 04 & 05 were color match , each and every one of them.
I had to cut 31 wires on my main harness and the merge I did with the pig tails were all color matched.
I'd say it was a easy project.
Thanks a lot for your help.

My bet is that they messed up the ground connection for the speed sensor to cluster connection. Based on the specs for the signal output in the service manual, there should not be a difference between the two.

Does the odo mileage stay with the cluster or is it stored in the car's computer?
I want to do the same swap as you, but I want the actual odo reading to stay with the car.

The cluster I got had 87000 KM on it but looks like it is easy to put the millage where ever you want.
A bunch of people does it ( most of them illegally ) .
To answer the question milage stay in the cluster itself.

I can do the mileage reprogramming. It is illegal to change the mileage on a car, but in this case you are changing it to the correct mileage for the vehicle. I read an article recently about how high of a percentage of used cars have modified or replaced clusters and it actually makes it pretty scary to purchase a used car.

This is why I'm keeping my old cluster with the millage and date written behind it.
That way I can prove the exact millage of my car.

Will Toyota Canada help me with this? Should I even ask them?
Does anyone know where I can get this done around Montreal?
I don't even have a cluster yet, but I feel it's indispensable to have a tach in a manual car.

A co-worker made a few calls and he can have it done for $300.00 via the OBDII port.
It's a cheap price to pay if you want to do fraud but if it is for something 100% legit I think it is a little high.
I don't know if CTScott can do it just with the cluster in his hands but if it is the case just send it over him.
There is one for sale on KiJiJi right now. Ad # 592301748 . I bought my RS seats from him.

I charge $50 + return shipping to do it. It actually can not be done via the OBDII port for Toyota vehicles. You have to reburn the EEPROM on the cluster with the encrypted odometer data.

Thanks! Is that guy negociable? There are tons of them in the local scrapyards (car-part.com) for around 50$. My '04 has 150k km and change, and a local scrapyard has one with 149k km for 80$.

Hey guys,
I've been following this thread for a while, very good information to be had here.
I'd just like to confirm something from the .pdf CTScott provided.
I have a 2000 Vitz that came automatic, I converted it to Manual and I am trying to install a tach.
In the .pdf it says the tach signal comes from the Black wire on the C13 connector, is this true?

I'll answer that if you don't mind.
C13 ( Black ) is the tach signal and to get my 05 Tach to work in my 04 I took the signal on the OBDII port that is also the black wire and hooked it up to the Black wire on the C13 connector.
This is a very easy swap if you take your time.

That's what I'm confused about, my cluster didn't come with a tach gauge but I'm seeing the black wire in my C13 connector.
Can I pick up the tach signal from that wire? My Vitz is JDM so it doesn't have an OBDII port

You should be able to use that wire for your tach. The pin on the OBD connector where that wire goes to for US and Canadian cars is an unused pin for OBDII communications. Toyota just happens to bring the pulsed tach signal to that pin.

To answer this. No sedan in Canada have a tach. Some US models have a tach like the 05 hatchback.
The same swap is required for a 05 cluster in any Canadian sedan.

Matrix XRS or Corolla XRS rear disc should bolt right on. You'll only need to re drill the rotors for 4 bolt pattern.
I don't know about the park brake cables though.

The Vitz has wiring differences from the USDM Echo. You will need to track down the wiring diagrams for your car and for the one which the cluster came from.

Hey Dear,
I also tried changing my old meter (without RPM) with the one having RPM Needle. I followed the same PIN Diagram and things. Thanks God, Every thing is working properly after the swap except for speedometer.
In fact, the new speedometer is showing a delayed speed. Like for testing I turned on the GPS in android and matched with the speedometer and the speedometer reading is 10 km/hr delayed.
For example, meter is showing speed of 40 km/hr while in actuality the speed is 50 KM/HR.
Please help me with this one

You might have a different speed sensor ratio in the transmission that the car the cluster came from.

Thanks for replying. So is there anything I can do about the sensor? I mean can I make any adjustment or I have to buy another speed sensor that is completely synchronised with the new meter?
I was also thinking about resetting the ECU. Would that help?
Bluevitz-rs
12-09-2016, 11:05 AM
If it is the case, there's nothing you can do other than completely tear apart the transmission and change the gear on the diff to match the ratio of the other transmission and speed sensor.
The speed signal goes directly from the sensor in the transmission to the cluster and then to the ecu. Resetting the ECU won't do anything. Be sure you don't have a bad connection from your wire changeover. Resistance in the signal wire could be the cause of the low speed indication.
engineer6
12-09-2016, 11:38 AM
.YouR point regarding different ratio is plausible as I have tried different meters with the dealer and all had the same issue.
But still to be on safe side, I will check for cold joints causing attenuation in speed signal.
Post Script: for other people information, I am driving Toyota Vitz 2001(not echo or Yaris) imported directly from Japan.

I know this is an old post, but I wanted to complete the work that was started here and finish the wiring diagram for this cluster swap for the hi/low beams problem. After looking at the two diagrams, I'm fairly certain how to get the hi/low beam LED to work on the cluster. The '05 cluster gleans power directly from the headlights in order to power the LED, whereas the '04 cluster has a splice from the main power block that runs the cluster in order to power the light bulb. The connection to the headlight switch merely connects the hi/low beam lamp circuit to ground allowing either the LED or the lightbulb to illuminate when the switch is flipped on.
So my theory is this:
Splice a wire from the '04 connector, C14 pin 1(L-Y), to the '05 connector, C14 pin 22(R-L). This should connect the LED to the 12v power source that runs the entire cluster and should power the LED when you flip on your hi beams.
I can confirm this shortly after I complete my own swap this weekend.
