Older car springs were straight, not tapered like the Yaris. It was easy to cut to lower the car.
If the springs on the Yaris were cut, it wouldn't sit on the perch correctly.

Do it right or don't do it at all. That's the opinion that I have experienced here. Why? pretty much is voicing the communities impressions.

Ditto. I've cut many springs... back in the day.
Nothing wrong with doing so (if you do it correctly, per Yarisugi) but there are so many economical lowering springs and coilovers available nowadays that, unless you have some kind of really, super, ultra, negatively unpopular car, you can just buy a set.
Back in the day, the only coilovers available were Koni's which were a couple thousand each. You had to know your own custom spring lengths and rates. There was no Eibach, Tein, HKS, Cusco, etc., etc. (not in the US, anyway). Although, Celica owners had it relatively good; there were TRD and Toy Store springs available. I have TRD race springs on my 1979 Celica.
Tuners have it so easy, nowdays...

If you cut one end you lose your comfort ride and the other end they end up stiff. Cutting springs is for amateurs with today's availability of cheap parts to do it right.

I know that 100%!!! thats why i have trd springs!! im just gonna slam it for 1 day!!!!

^ Nothing wrong with that. Guys on here slam their cars to the point of shock failure and no one blinks. :iono:
too true, to the point shocks might as well just be metal beams.

OK got it!!!
Use a grinder with cutting discs, the better the quality of the discs the easier but you'll go through several. Then grind a flat spot. Your best to cut the comfort end so they won't sag too much. Comfort end is usually where the coil is not wound so tight.
After all it's just for static use at a car show.

If u do to cut your springs, you'll have to cut the bottom of the fronts down... have to retain you upper spring set for the mount. but garms got a point. Your struts will cash out quickly. I know mine were woreout before i chopped the springs but my shock/struts are done but my next purchase will b a coilovers. I will tell you in order to get slammed there quite a bit of spring that u gotta chop off. I bet I put mine in and out 4-5 times till I got all I could out of it.

The rears seem like they would sit fine if u cut the bottom of the spring as much as you want right?? lots or perch to sit on?? the fronts seek like they only have so much of cutting. I heard some guy in this forums saying that he cut 1/4 from bottom and 1/4 from top on fronts.... and like 2 coils from bottom on rears???

my bad it took so long. was having issues with this damn computer. but anyway here is the car. I don't have any of the springs themselves. I will tell you I cut probably almost a 1/3 outta the fronts and a 1/4 is outta the rears. it took a lot of in and out to get them just so.

1/3 of a coil or 1/3 of the whole thing??

I have suspension but I know people here in P.R. who cut Yaris springs and the ideal to get slammed with comfty ride is at bottom cut 2 coils and cut bumpstops like this

Rear springs seem like they would sit fine on perch if the bottom is cut.Front ones seem like they would sit at the edge of perch if cut too much... what say you!?

They would sit funny if u just lower the car down. The pain is about halfway compressed u have to weasel in and get the spring in the seat. It is a touch of an angle but it will work. Mine are about 4 - 5 shorter than untouch stock springs.
Sorry about the confusion about cutting part. I was meaning the whole spring. If u cut a 1/3 of a coil you'll b mad cuz all that work and its about 1/8" drop lol. Believe me haha

Actually front ones are no big deal cause its only on the edge, what you will have to worry about are rears since they usually fell off for being too short.
gojon17
04-29-2014, 10:02 AM
Yeah but dont u think that the edge of front perch isnt as strong as center???

Well yea but people who cut their springs don't care.
I myself don't cut springs cause it ruins the entire suspension system.

How is the ride quality on the highway? Looks cool but is it functional. How does the car drive? Is it stiff or bouncy, comfortable, or unbearable?

Car drove perfect.. no problems... whoever says cut springs are dead is a damn idiot. They sit fine on front and rear. Its all good
