I am posting this because P195/50R16 Yokohama AVID Ascend have become available for the 3rd generation Yaris SE. Previously, the best high mileage tire available was the Continental ExtremeContact DWS with a UTQG of 540; the Yokohama UTQG is 740. I had my local tire shop check their stock and they also called 5 national wholesalers and could not find the tire. Tirerack.com has them and they sitting in my garage waiting to be installed.

The car came with Bridgestone Turanza EL400, with a UTQG of 260, I have put 28,000 on them. This is the worst tire I have ever had on a car, they have no grip, have always broken loose from start, no rain grip and they are skates when the temperature gets down in the 30's. The ride quality is terrible. The ware indicators are almost even with the tread, about 2/32 tread remaining. These tires are $50 more each than the Yokohama's and Continentals...

If there is interest, I will give my initial imprecations of the Yokohama's after I have them installed and put a few miles on them.

ive narrowed down my next tire to the avid ascend or general altimax hp, but there are few choices in the 175/65-15 size for the L.

I agree completely....the bridgestone turanzas are by far the worst tire I have ever owned in any conditions.

I wonder if the mileage is really that worse on 185/60R15 tires.
There are many more choices that size.

Does the L and LE use the Bridgestone Turanza EL400? If not, look up the specific tire at Tirerack.com

in some regions, the LE gets the goodyear assurance fuel max (which is none too great either). otherwise its the turanza le-400....one of the worst reviewed tires on tirerack I have ever seen.

for the price and reviews, the General Altimax HP looks pretty good.

You are not limited to 175/65's; there are several other sizes that fit the car just as well.

Installed the new tires, feels like a completely new car. The ride is fantastic, car absorbs bumps with almost no road noise and the steering is much lighter. The tires do not grip like performance tires although these are high mileage tires. P195/50R16 Yokohama AVID Ascend; UTQG 740; 65,000 mileage warranty

I know. I prefer the highest profile possible since this is not the softest riding car. every little bit helps.

I looked into that one. its billed as all season, but seems like it sticks like a summer/performance tire. the more reviews that are rolling in, the more it looks like it isn't too great in snow, where some all seasons are pretty decent. I also saw it discussed on a prius forum, and it is definitely not in any way shape or form a lower rolling resistance tire.

I guess it seems like more tire than the yaris needs.

But $80 bucks each through tire rack plus a $70 gift card it seems to be once of the cheapest and best tires for the 175/65/15 size, also from what I've read today its seems to do fairly well for a all season in snow.

the more reviews that have been coming it for the Pilot a/s, the worse the surveys for snow/ice have been getting (only about 200,000 miles worth of reviews...a pretty new tire):

click on "surveys"

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=Pilot+Sport+A%2FS+3+%28H-+or+V-Speed+Rated%29&partnum=765HR5PSAS3&vehicleSearch=true&fromCompare1=yes&autoMake=Toyota&autoYear=2014&autoModel=Yaris 3-Door&autoModClar=L&tab=Survey

the general altimax surveys better in that regard (over 28,000,000 miles worth of reviews)

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=General&tireModel=Altimax+HP&partnum=765HR5AMAXHP&vehicleSearch=true&fromCompare1=yes&autoMake=Toyota&autoYear=2014&autoModel=Yaris&autoModClar=&tab=Survey

im also doubting that on the yaris, any performance advantages will be realized......the car has handling limits that will be reached before a decent tire will show its deficiencies.
