removing AC compressor

I need to inspect my AC compressor and some parts on it. It is so hard to see that I want to remove it all together. I havent had it belted in 4 years and I think the fluid charge is gone. Arent you supposed to see some fluid in the little round view that is on that aluminum block/view thing on top of the engine..?? There is nothing visible in mine.
So it shouldnt be a big deal to remove the hoses,no?????????
Anyone dont this and know the bolts etc..?????
If I need to replace the unit ,is there an aftermarket compressor that I can sub for it..??
In case I need to....maybe there is a better generic one that will bolt on with an adaptor..
And when I get it all back in ,how much will Toyota charge me to recharge the whole system???? thanks

I wouldn't assume that the system is empty. It can still have some amount of charge, so it is best (and legally required) to have it evacuated professionally.

There are just four bolts that mount the compressor to the block.

You can pick up an OEM Denso one from RockAuto for about $300.

No idea on the recharging cost, as I have the equipment to do it myself.

I talked to a dealer guy and he said rarely can you just replace the compressor because the ruined bearings and vanes inside have torn up the other parts of the system like hoses and filters etc....
My compressor makes horrible grinding noises when belted.... is he even partly correct..
????? I wouldnt ever have a dealer do anything but I am curious..

I would replace just a compressor, but I may be wrong. Unless, it's come apart with pieces broken off, it can't hurt anything else.

Replacing just the compressor is typically fine. The dryer (basically a desiccant pack) should also be replaced with the compressor. And, the system should have a vacuum drawn on it for an extended period (30+ minutes) to remove any moisture or particulate from the lines.
