Right axle seal leaking $263.00 installed is that ok price?

I was wondering is that a good deal or overpriced to install new seal from Toyota dealer. How hard is it to install new axel seal. Thanx

I have no idea as to if that is a good price, but what's involved is pulling the axle to gain access to the seal and then pulling and replacing the seal.

You have to first drain the tranny fluid (or gear oil). Once that is done, the easiest way to remove the axle is to disconnect the strut from the steering knuckle and the strut support from the knuckle as well. Then you can pivot the knuckle enough to have clearance for pulling the axle out of the tranny.

Does that mean you don't have to remove the hub nut? I'm thinking that would greatly simplify my transmission swap. Also, I forgot to buy new hub nuts...

No. You don't. In a worst case, on the driver's side you might also have to disconnect the tie rod end to give the knuckle more play.

Oh good--I did order new castle nuts and pins for the tie rods and control arms.

I just take out the two lower strut bolts, and the swaybar endlink. That has always given me enough movement to pull both axles out.

The install price is crazy compared to how little the cost of the axle seal is. Few bucks if i remember when i got my driver side fixed by a fellow member.

How bad is your leak? Mine dripped a small puddle at every parking.

OEM axle seal cost about 20 dollars or so, you are looking at 200+ labor cost, which is quite expensive and expected from Toyota dealer.

Yup shop rate is anywhere between 90$ and 125$ we charge 95$ per hr

It's 2hrs to remove and then install the seal.

My local dealer labour rate is 115$/hr. So 230$ + 10$ + taxes is about right.

My friend does for 54$/hr and it took him less than 2 hours so I paid 100$ cash no taxes including parts and labour.

Thank you for info. Once i remove the axle , how do i pull out the seal, do I need special tool to pull out or just yanked out with screw driver then tap in new one in with rubber Mallot. Thanx again for the help. ��

Be careful when inserting the new seal--it's very easy to deform or tear the edges if you don't put it in straight.

Also lube the axle before u reinstall and be careful .
