Small crack found in engine. Concern ?

2006 Sedan.

Sorry for the newbie question but I was wondering if this crack (which is quite small) is of a concern? Is it just a plastic covering ?

Just FYI, the 'stop and check engine light' doesn't appear when I'm driving nor do any other dashboard indicators. Also haven't noticed any differences in driving the car as of yet.

Fix it ASAP, the engine is sucking in false air from that hole and it's past the airfilter so the air sucked in is dirty and can damage your engine in the long run. !

What he said, if that is an actual hole instead of a surface scratch, fix it soon.

start car , light smoke and blow smoke over hole and see if it actually is a hole or just a small imperfection ...kind off like a smoke machine when looking for vacuum leaks ..if smoke goes in u have a leak if so fix it :P

you can pick up a used intake manifold for like 50 bucks which is much cheaper than what could happen.

That's the intake manifold not the engine block. Which is plastic...engine block metal.

If it were a hole I would have to believe the engine would not be running normally and the check engine light would be on.

But blowing smoke at the hole from a cigarette and seeing it sucked into the engine would prove me wrong! Also, spraying a can of starting fluid at the hole and hearing the engine speed up would confirm its a hole.

When I bought one of my wrecked ones the alternator had been pushed into the intake manifold and it took a chunk out of that runner. The car ran slightly rough, but I was amazed that even sucking in that extra air that it did not through a code. I suspect that it would have thrown a lean code on that cylinder if I pushed it.

That being said, the O.P. should definitely patch the hole or replace the manifold. I patched mine with black silicone and it has been running fine on Crashy for quite some time.

Since the manifold is plastic epoxy will do it. No need to replace it.

Quick way to check for a air leak is to spray WD40.
If the idle increases you have a leak.

I would jb weld it , patch the hole man. jb weld is only $3-4 bucks.

A little high heat permatex in black can also seal the crack..
