Hello guys, I'm looking for an intake for my NZT240 Premio, same motor and drive components as the Corolla/Yaris (1NZ-FE) in a bigger sedan body.

I jumped the plug and ordered a K&N Drop-in filter for the stock factory airbox, but I'm now having second thoughts on whether to install a short-ram intake.

I'm attaching a photo of my plans below. Now my question is, will it provide significant gains over a drop-in filter I already ordered to sell it off and get a mushroom filter and attach it right before the factory snorkel?

These are the mods that will go in the car to support it.
-Lightweight Crank Pulley
-Full 2" Downpipe from manifold
-Magnaflow Catalytic Converter
-Magnaflow Chambered endbox
-1ZZ Throttle Body Swap

The car is running a 4 Speed Automatic Transmission btw (Not CVT).

Thanks in advance!
Rakin.

why?

more power? Probably not, but who knows. A few guys on here have cut up the stock airbox before the filter and said that has dome something.

There is no way to really tell if a generic setup will make more power.

Don't really want to hack up the factory airbox and potentially make it suck in more hot air from the engine bay. It's almost ~35C here most of the summer.

Hmmm, a CAI might fit from a 2006+ yaris. It has the same angle on the intake manifold as your car.

Would you be able to optimize through reducing intake bends in the form of total absolute value of the piping angles?

With the amount of space there without the air box, I could probably run a straight pipe.

But then even more concerns come up...

Okay, then what should I do? Stick to drop-in?

Can't tell you, really.

I personally prioritise hydrolock avoidance as top. Then exterior noise reduction (I'd love to hear it more in interior!), then flow.

If you followed my priorities, you'd stay completely stock. I wouldn't even bother with the drop-in, though you've got it already.

If you set priorities for yourself like so:
Hydro lock avoidance
Flow
...
...
...
...
...
Noise

while trying to stay away from cutting factory pieces, you're probably better off getting CAI straight as possible.

And judging from the general consensus, don't expect any (noticeable) gains, even with that.

But I can confirm, less bends more noise, marginally more flow, only top end, not noticeable. If Integras argued for and against about gains on a 1.8 at 5500rpm up, I couldn't argue for it on a 1.5 that peaks at 6000, for a car 10 years newer.

Please, someone argue against me, because I'd love to hear your setup if you go CAI.

And yeah, I avoid short ram because of engine bay heat, and other funky gases that might swim around in there. I've got no power, and no boost, so no need.

Okay. My priorities would include avoiding hydrolocking too because the car is lowered and it does drive with water upto the fog lamps sometimes (Drainage systems are crap here). Noise isn't a problem. And from the looks of it, a Weapon R intake for the Yaris could fit my car which is short ram with a cold air pipe. I guess intake alone wouldn't do anything for the power but coupled with the pulley, 1zz tb and exhaust mods it could help with the extra flow.

Also how about a blox filter with a velocity stack placed just behind factory cold air snorkel pipe? Or even the Yaris Weapon R Intake?

Definitely more flow capacity. Then again, if you're not pushing 8000 rpm on reinforced engine-ternals, would you notice?

I think it would be like trying to chug a beer from either bottle or a beer bong. If you're still gulping, there won't be much difference in drinking time.

Then again, much like the intake, the beer bong is always more impressive.

I see. Better stick to the factory airbox and stick in the drop-in filter then. No point of going CAI then.

Yup, that's the way I see it. And the police and my neighbours here appreciate it.

But hey, you've gone this far. The sound must be pretty cool with your current setup.

lol those are upcoming mods. Probably will be done by the end of September. Let's see how it doesn't sound.
In this country, police are all cool. :P
