2. Toyota Yaris: Soviet sister vehicle to Boris? Toyota explains this is a combo of Greek goddess Charis, a symbol of beauty and elegance, and the German expression of agreement, “ya.” Budgetmobile Yaris is no symbol of beauty and elegance. It's a symbol of being broke.

This. In America, fuel economy is such a big concern that people will pay upwards of $12k for a Yaris with less than 100k miles. Perhaps the 1.0L 1st gen in Russia is a "broke" person's car, but the 2nd and 3rd gen 1.5's in the US are anything but.
In the U.K. you have to be far from broke to afford a Yaris! It's not called "rip off Britain/treasure island" for nothing.

I think it's the symbol of 'Skipping A Month' when getting gasoline :headbang:
In 1 1/2 years exactly, I've spent $786.68 for gas in Scruffy Yar Yar -

^^^^^ This. I think another concern, in addition to fuel economy, is reliability. I'd think the reliability of the Yaris also helps it retain a high resale value.
Also, people have different things they do and don't like to spend their money on. I know a couple. They dom't have any kids. They drive really old Volvos that just won't die. They buy very inexpensive clothing. The husband invented a device that is used in many surgical procedures. The only way anyone would have an inkling that they have the money they do, is that they live in a house they bought for about 5 million USD. I know another guy whose net worth hasn't dipped below 50 million USD in many years. He drives a dented 1972 Buick Skylark that barely 'passes smog' , but buys his wife a new Mercedes whenever she wants one. I know another family. They live on a 10 acre suburban estate....pool, tennis court, stables. The most recent addition is a lake they stocked with fish. What do they drive? A bunch of Volkswagen Beetles/Bugs...all different vintages. People aren't always easy to pigeonhole.
There is a saying I've heard in DFW -- "30k Millionaire". Here people use a term I prefer, "All hat and no cattle". Some Yaris owners might not have a lot, but some just prefer to be 'All cattle and no hat'.

Your link crashed my browser. Which figures; since it's to the elitists in the Chicago mediuh.
In this day and age of nothing-down easy credit (based on non-financial parameters) a better sign of being broke is having an expensive car with heavy time payments on.
My Yaris is PAID FOR. Money I make, I can spend on something ELSE.
In fact, I am looking to sell the Yaris, for an older 4x4 truck if I can find it. I can do this because I don't have to WORRY about being upside-down on it. Two months I've been trying to sell it...but, you know what? If I don't find a buyer, I don't lose. I'm still okay with a good car, just one I'm not using much.
The elitists at the Chicago Tribune cannot conceive of a lifestyle not based on gaudy status symbols paid for with borrowed money.

^^^^^ Yep. That philosophy is ingrained on both sides of my family. I don't think anyone of us has ever had a car payment. I think that term "30k millionaire" originally came from people buying expensive cars with heavy time payments.
IMHO, THIS is a symbol of being broke here:

If I was broke, I woulda bought an Echo, as they can be had for 2-5K when I was looking last year. I bought my Yaris because I worked on Yotas at a Yota dealership for 2 years and these powertrains are pretty proven and bulletproof. I still work on cars, different maker now, but we both drive Yotas, the wife and I. I love my Yar, although I do miss my 94 Caprice wagon when racing someone. I beat many, many people with that station wagon. The Yar, I have to beat em in cornering and reaction times, but, cute little cars the Yars are.

Just because one has money does no mean they have to throw it away on things they do not want or need.
I bought a Yaris precisely because it was relatively cheap and basic ......enough said! :)

I bought my 2012 Yaris (new, paid cash) not because I'm broke, but because I'm cheap and because I don't get any "thrill" out of driving. I just wanted something to reliably get me from point A to point B. I could easily have afforded much more car, but it wouldn't have made me any happier.
I'm also the guy selling little trinkets on ebay to make $1-$2 because I like easy money, not because I need it :)

Interesting topic. when my old volvo broke down I pondered what I wanted in a car, cheap was never on my list. but low maintainence/operation cost and realiability are as my volvo has something broken that needs fixing every year. and permium gas is not somthing I like to pay for anymore.
So after a through search at the time the Yaris came up on the top of the list for reliability and fuel economy, the price was acturally a bonus as I was ready to pay more for a new car.

Only shallow, image-obsessed people judge a person's economic status on what sort of car they drive, how big their home is, etc. Just because I can afford a new Lexus doesn't mean that I want an tech-bloated, thief-magnet, status-symbol automobile (with an mandatory automatic transmission - ughh).

I've found that when I was looking for a car, there were plenty cheaper. More specs for less money. However, I also found that the Yaris fit me perfectly.
I've got a lot compliments on my car actually. Saying it looks futuristic, sporty, fun, etc.
Best compliments I get are ones that say this car really fits me!

I bought a Yaris because:
-cheap enough to buy outright (no debt = not broke)
-good on fuel (if you think Yaris = broke, try a 4mpg camaro on 94octane....)
-reliable
-handle/stop well enough for autoX
-look ok. My Grandma thinks it's cute and she has good taste in cars (last car was a 74 Formula 400)
I'd say from my experience as a mechanic the "broke" car would be the large SUV that has larger wheels and is poorly maintained....

:thumbsup:.The first car I had to drive when I got my license was an old 67 Firebird convertible my dad had. It had a high performance aftermarket mainifold (wasn't Edelbrook..can't remember the brand) and a Carter AFB 4-barrell carbeurator. My dad had had someone install both at some point. It got 6 MPG. Of course gas was much cheaper back then.

Hey I bought an 03 Echo back in 06. Just remember where the Yaris came from. 300k and motoring on...but the control arms need replacement, the exhaust has a hole, so the car sounds like its modded, but it's actually broken. Civics and Beamers try to race me revving engines. I laugh out loud every time. Is there an Echo thread? Love that little go-kart!

Morons.
Typical of opinions at places like Edmunds who think any car that isnt a BMW is not worthy. That people would desire a small, reliable, practical car with good fuel economy doesnt seem to occur to them.

I must be missing something here. A Yaris is a sign of wealth. It allows me all kinds of mechanical sin...from wooden boats to Moto Guzzis to hot rod Fords. Partly because my daily driver is so darn economical to operate.
I remember in 08 i was thinking how silly it was for me to be driving my CTD Ram to my teaching job and parking it under a tree everyday. The guy over my principal (one step below the superintendent) showed in a white 3 door. We talked. He said how he got 40mpg driving between campuses and how happy he was with it. He was making a solid 2x my salary. I was sold!

Cars....the biggest waste of money in my opinion. If I did not need one I would not go out and buy one. But since I need one, I opted for a functional, low maintenance, high mpg Yaris. Who wouldn't with my attitude? :iono:

I drive many different rigs, my crane truck (Miss Piggy), a'98 Dodge flatbed 1 ton with a Cummins diesel (and 289,000 miles), the 2000 Toyota Rav4, all only when the particular capabilities of the rig are needed. The '08 Yaris is ALWAYS my first choice, if I can make it work, as in don't need 4 wheel drive or to haul a ton or pick up two. So, it may be a few days sometime between Yaris use, and every time I get back behind the wheel I am tickled to death with it! It feels so tight (89K is all) and is a blast to drive/park, and especially make u turns in.
My drive to the crane yard is 13 miles one way, and of course taking the Yaris when feasible, keeps money in my pocket. No question, according to the ScanGauge I have in both Toyota's.
Monday I am making a very rare trip into the dealership, to get the free fix for the steering column thing, that recall (something about an airbag?). While I'm waiting I'll ride the fold up bike (fits great in the back) down to a somewhat upscale (for Pocatello) restaurant and have a nice long lunch, using the 28 bucks I got from Toyota from the class action law suit, to pay for it. I almost feel guilty in doing both of these things, I like Toyota too damn much.

it's not accurate, in our society, to judge someone's wealth based on the type of car that they choose to drive. some of you here might have heard of the book "the millionaire next door".
there are many "hidden" wealthy people in society who choose not to live in extravagance. they don't drive fancy cars or have fancy houses, but they do have successful investments and are good with money. they are frugal people who are not all about bling and outward appearance. i'd imagine that some of them drive the yaris and similar cars.
image is a large part of marketing when it comes to selling upscale products, which is in part why we are repeatedly told that we look "poor" if we don't buy/own certain products. they need to activate a defensive feeling in order to create a strong desire for their products and "shaming" works on many personality types.

I'm not a millionaire and I don't live next door but I do drive a Yaris. I could afford a car costing several times more but for what purpose? To impress some status seeking idiot? The Yaris serves my needs. A small, practical hatchback. Cheap to buy, cheap to fuel up, cheap to maintain. I don't need anything more. I'll spend the money I saved somewhere else.
To me the Yaris is a symbol of being smart.

The car I had before my 2007 Yaris was a 2001 Suzuki Swift (same thing as a Geo Metro except with a 4cyl 1.3 L engine). I purchased it new over Labor Day weekend in 2001 for almost 20% under the factory sticker. I guy I knew at the time said to me 'you can drive any car you want to, so why not drive something more expensive, etc."? I said 'Why not...why would I want to sink more money than is sensible into a depreciating asset"? The way the guy looked at me, it was as if I was speaking a foreign language .

I've been partial to small cars anyway. I was a dispatcher in different jobs. Two delivery companies I worked for had Yaris' for delivery cars. But in 2010 I needed a new car, I liked the Yaris, so thats what I drive. I do say that since gas was soooooo expensive was the car became a good investment. Today gas is cheap, so more money in my pocket.
To answer the OP, yes I'm broke. Yet I will keep this car forever.

Being broke? Wow it can't be a user preference??? I don't like
big cars and I paid off 2 Yaris in 5 years 2 years ago a Sedan and a Hatchback took out the same day I dumped the offer for a Camry Hybrid to get 2 cars, got no bills and just feel an urge from time to time that I want an FRS cause I deserve it, but I just love the car and other than that I roll in a 1987 Suzuki Samurai.
My Yaris is pure preference http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/01/23/1d26ba2203dcf4f2571315034347de0d.jpg
