Be like Jay Leno and keep it in a climate controlled garage and drive it once a year.
Single best thing I can think of given your environment, keep it clean. Body panels, wheel wells, under-carriage. Mechanically, they are practically bullet proof.

What's the best way to get to the under-carriage? Take it to a car wash, or something like that? With winter coming on, I know this is important with all the salt on the road and whatnot. Sad to say, I've neglected doing this to my Yaris thus far....

The Yaris lasts too long as it is without special care. You'll get bored with the car years before it dies.

CTScott puts some sort of wax or coating on the under carriage of his Yaris. He has posted pictures of the under carriage of his Yaris (for other reasons), and members have commented that it looks virtually new. Of course, Scott has his own lift in his garage. I don't know how time consuming whatever he does is, and thus if it would be worth it to have someone else do what he does (since I assume you don't have your own lift at home *big grin* (emoticon not working)). If you PM him, I imagine he'd tell you what he does, and if it would likely be worth it to have a local shop do the same.

Kal-El, I'm gonna drive this sucker until the wheels fall off. :-)
nook, thanks dude. Would love to find a place around here that did that sort of thing. Hey man, closing in on 300,000 miles. Let us know when it happens.

Oil changes. Many argue about brand and interval, but as long as it's something consistent and not outlandish, then you practically guarantee you'll never have an engine failure due to an oil issue.
My 2 cents.

Cosmoline, like from the factory?
To answer OP, the "single best thing" outside of, "follow the recommended maintenance schedule", would be: avoid accidents. That should cover everything...

I coated the bottom of mine with Herculiner (paint on truck bed liner). Besides that for rust prevention, regular oil changes and coolant changes are about all for keeping the engine going forever.
