2 weeks ago I took my 07 Avensis (1.8 engine 147hp) for an oil change. They put in castrol 5w40 fully synthetic.
But I noticed the fuel consuption rocketed.
Highway; avg. consumption was 5,8-6,2 while now after the change its between 8-8,4lt/km
City driving; avg. was 7,1-7,4 now is 10,1-10,3 lt/km
Any ideas? I havent changed my driving pace, I always shift at around 2.500rpm.
I wont be receiving my OBD2 adapter till January, so any suggestions as to what it may be are welcome.
Note that the tires have normal pressure levels.
Thanks.

Note: I dont know if the thread has to go to off topic subforum etc. If theres a place for it to be moved, please do so.
Heres my avensis for those who are wondering what the heck it is (im talking about you 'muricans [emoji14])

Have you checked what oil is needed for your car? Usually written on the oil cap. (Not sure if that's the case in EU)

But my guess that you should use 5w30 instead.

I always used fully synthetic 5w40
I tried once semi synthetic but had the same problem as now. When I replaced semi synthetic with fully synthetic this problem went on for about a month then consumption went back to normal

you 'muricans

SMH,. Hopefully we will never again have to hear a POTUS so lacking re proper elocution. As much as I can't stand Obama, Obama gets an A in this area (when he isn't trying to affect the accent/cadence/etc. most accepted by the audience of a given speech/presentation ...something he does with far greater competence than Hillary). Giving #43 (GWB) a passing grade in this area would be generous at best.

My bet is that your oil changer accidentally used a much more viscous oil than 5W40.

Nope, oil is correct. Today the consumption went up to (avg. 14-14,5lt/km)

 No offense ever taken. One of my male cousins gave me a daily calendar years ago that featured one Bush quote for each day. Some of the quotes were sort of 'cringe worthy', but I don't remember any of them influencing me to feel even slightly embarrassed to be an American....and I'm not a Bush 43 fan. I think he was one of the worst presidents in U.S. History. Despite his MANY failings/shortcomings, I do think he loves his country. I don't mind a Texas accent at all. I've never been to Hawaii nor Alaska, but I've been to every other state, and I think people here in the Houston area are generally very friendly and approach life with an attitude that allows them to be quite happy. Despite embracing the local accent, as an American, I feel if one wants to be the POTUS, one should pronounce 'Americans'....as well as the names of countries (I almost equally cant stand his 'eye-rack' and 'eye-ran')...correctly. I think Bush 43 easily possesses the linguistic ability to pronounce these words correctly. I imagine the desire from within just isn't there. As an American, I find three Bush 43 pronunciations in particular ('muricans, eye-rack, eye-ran), coming from a POTUS, to be an embarrassment.

also wondering what this means
Have you noticed any loss of power?
(my suggestion would have been tire pressure (as this had applied to me) if you wouldn't have mentioned it)

I would check the injectors next, but that might be a kind of a mess I would not do before checking the long term fuel trim.
I'm also interested how the o2 values vary.

Sorry . It's the acronym (in English...or perhaps more accurately in American English) for President of the United States. Other examples of acronyms (in English) would be NATO for North Atlantic Treaty Organization and SCOTUS for Supreme Court of the United States.

^^^^ Sorry. I saw post #12 and replied to it without scrolling down, thinking Vivalaflam had posted post #12 because I used it in the reply to him. It is too early .

Did they adjust the handbrake? Is the handbrake on even just a little bit? Touch the centre of the rear wheels after one of these drives.

Glad that worked. But you said you always used 5w40 before?
