14 inch Tires on 15 inch Rims?

My 2008 Yaris currently has 15" tires, Bridgestone Potenza P185/60R15 84T, and I need to replace them.

Is it safe or even possible to put 14" tires on it?

The 14" tires are a lot cheaper than the 15" ones and the salesman at the dealership I talked to told me you can't put 15" tires on 14" rims. Is that true?

If it is true, then so be it, I'll pay the extra money for the 15" tires. Just want to make sure I'm not being lied to.

No. 14" tires would not fit on 15" rims.

You should be able to find a good tyre at a very reasonable price here. Plus, no tax or fees, and free/fast shipping to your door. Then find a local installer for $10 a corner.

You could also get a set of 14" steel wheels from another import (older civic/toyota/mazda) and use those instead. I use 14" wheels for my winter tires, but that's because I run a really silly tire size (175/70R14).

What are you thoughts on the TMPS rebuild kits that they try to get you to purchase with the new tires?

The rubber seal and the battery have a finite lifetime. So it is a good idea to rebuild after all these years.

Rebuild kits replace the rubber seal, and the nuts which often seize on. On a Toyota where the TPMS sensors last a long time, I would replace the seals every time new tires go on.

I have 60k miles on my Yaris. Would you still replace the TPMS sensors or wait till the second set of new tires?

You don't replace the sensors until they fail, but the sensor "sleeve kits" should be done to reduce the chances of leaks/corrosion.
