Is it unusual for new cars to get lower than advertised mpg until the engine "breaks in"?

Few weeks ago I picked up a brand new 2015 Yaris 1.5 automatic. My job requires me to drive a lot so I had to have an economical car. After few tanks, I'm really disappointed with mileage. Usually 28-30 mpg with 70% city 30% highway with 90% in Eco mode. Sure, I live in Wisconsin and we have really cold winters, but still ... From what I'm seeing here on the forum, everybody get much better fuel economy.

Before Yaris I drove a 2009 Honda Fit/Jazz and I averaged 38 mpg combined in same conditions. Recently my rental was Nissan Versa Note; during few weeks of driving it, my average was 33 mpg. I bought Fit used with 45,000 miles and Versa already had 30,000 miles when I got it from Enterprise, so I'm not sure what mileage they were getting when new.

I'm not sure if this helps, but I live in northern MN and my mileage in the heart of winter tends to be quite a bit less than the advertised mpg. And my dead-of-winter mpg is about 20-25% than summer mpg (due to colder air and winter-blend gasoline, I presume).

It took a solid 20k miles for my Wife's Kia to loosen up properly, but I don't know about Toyotas. The problem with the Yaris is that it's a bit heavier than the Echo, and is geared lower in an attempt to make up the speed difference. I'd actually say with normal-ish driving that's not terrible mileage. Make a long pass down a freeway and you'll take in the high 30s all day, possibly 40s if conditions are decent as you keep the speed low.

What is this Eco mode you speak of? Only for automatics? I drive a 15 Yaris SE. I'm averaging 36-37 mpg with shift points at 1500 ram's. If I raise it higher to 2-2500k between shifts I average 33-34. I also drive usually no higher than 65. When I do drive 75 the mileage goes down. I drive 50/50 city to highway. I'm just under 2800 miles.

Kia and Hyundai were fined BIG TIME last year for fudging mpg numbers. My better half drives a 12 Sportage and usually gets a check every year for a few hundred dollara from the dealership. Part of their settlement with the government. It's to pay for the customer's extra gas costs. And that is for the life of the car.

And yes, the yaris has a looong break in too. 20-30k for me. And what was said about winter gas is 100% true. my mileage drops at least 5-6 mpg in winter. Make sure and leave that defroster off if not in use. Runs the compressor on ac to remove humidity. My wife leaves it in defrost alot and gripes about mileage on her Rio. I do 70% highway to work, but do apt maint in my car so alot of low speed crud. avg 36 to 38. when not at work I do 37tp 39 and the best I've done was a trip from KC to St Louis and set cruze on 70 and did 47 mpg with the tire pressure set at 40psi.

You guys have 1nz-fe engines (1.5l). Is there any possibility that the performance decreases on a 2nz-fe (1.3l) engine?

It comes down to money, the next up in the class for Toyota is the Prius C. If the Yaris a gas car got better or similar mileage than its hybrid Prius C then that makes an internal competition that would overall be bad for the company . So that's why they don't allow better gas mileage for the Yaris because then everybody would buy a Yaris , the cheaper option. Conversely I believe that if we dig into ECU we could tap into a much greater fuel economy. When I was a kid we had carbureted cars that we're getting 30 and 40 miles per gallon so there's no reason shouldn't be getting 50 :-)

Ford Nissan and Honda don't have A Prius C type model in their lineup so that's why the comparative class cars i.e. The Fiesta fit and the note versa get so much better gas mileage then our Toyotas

Is ECO mode only for automatics? I have a 5 speed in my 15 Yaris SE and see nothing that illuminates ECO mode.

I don't disagree with your statement regarding keeping the Yaris' mileage lower then the Prius to keep the profits high for Yota. That being said I disaree that the above cars you mentioned get better mileage than the Yaris. There is a very big difference between the mileage rating on the window in the show room and the real world numbers. The Yaris is one of the few cars that you can realistically get much better then the claimed numbers. Likely has to do with what you stated making it look the the hybrids are much better on fuel.

Kia, Ford, Honda etc all publish unrealistic numbers to make sales on those cars and others.
