Hi Guys, I'm replacing the LCAs on my 03 Echo and I can't tell if the aft bolt on the arm has a welded nut or it. The bolt disappears into the subframe so I can't see the other side. Do I just drive it out or is there subframe disassembly required?

Thanks

The rear (vertically mounted) one is a bolt into a welded nut up in the sub frame. When they've been there for a long time without being removed they can be a real bear to break loose without snapping.

Heat and lubricant, hopefully it doesn't snap. Easy-outs aren't exactly easy with rust. Thanks

Success! Got the old ones out and the new ones in. The right one was a bastard to get out because the front bolt was facing the back of the oil pan. Had to jack under the oil pan maybe a 1/4 inch to get the bolt out. Found an easy trick to get the arm aligned at the back. Jack under two lug bolts to compress the suspension and the arm will go in straight. Also helps torque the ball joint nut appropriately.

Did your ball joints wear out?

What arms did you use as replacements?

I wasn't really sure until I pulled the wheel off. The joint was completely rigid and no grease. There is a light clunking and rattling noise from the right side. I bought no-name Taiwanese parts from Globe Parts Depot in Scarborough. The welds looked solid, I heard stories of tacked parts being sold.
The noise went away initially, but now it's only the rattling. It's now either the struts or the steering tie rod, but my steering is fine.

If you've never changed your sway bar end links, that could be rattling too. Another item I've had go bad are the rotational bearings on top of the front struts.

Yeah I was thinking of the struts on my way home today. I may not have tightened the links enough when I replaced the control arms.
