My '09 Yaris won't start! I recently changed the Camshaft Position Sensor because the old one was spewing oil out of it. I went to start the car today and she just cranked over but never started. I pulled all the plugs and she is getting fuel to every cylinder. I checked the new camshaft position sensor and saw about a 1/4 of a tsp of oil in the new sensor as well. I cleaned it with a q-tip and reconnected it but she still won't fire!!! I am going to compression test it today, but I don't know why I'm not getting spark. If anyone knows what I should do/try, it would greatly be appreciated.

Update!!!
Cylinder 1 Compression: 195psi
Cylinder 2 Compression: 155psi
Cylinder 3 Compression: 165psi
Cylinder 4 Compression: 190psi

It looks like you have a leaky head gasket or warped head on the center cylinders. Considering that it was starting before you replaced the crank sensor, I would check that. I would also check to make sure that each plug is getting spark since you are getting fuel.

Scott, I replaced the camshaft sensor, should I check and replace the crankshaft position sensor? I shot you a few messages as well.

I would put the original cam sensor back on to see if it starts.

You think the new one is defective

Scott, I tried that and I get P351-P354 ignition circuit malfunction

I pulled the crankshaft position sensor. I'm going to test it at work tomorrow. I don't know what else it could be, I studied the diagram and the crank sensor is in line with the ignition system and when it fails the car won't start or will be hard to start.

0351-0354 can be caused by the Oil control valve not working due to being plugged up. That is the round device mounted next the alternator. It also has a fine mesh filter mounted into the block below it.

How do I remove it? Do I replace it or clean it and re-install it? What about the mesh filter?

The valve is just mounted with one 10mm bolt. You can pull and clean it. The filter as well you can pull and clean.

Alllright. I'll work on that tomorrow. What do you think about the crankshaft sensor? I also don't understand how that valve throws off the ignition?

It's worth checking out the sensor and easy enough to do so if you have access to an oscilloscope.

What's an oscilloscope? I was gonna check the resistance with a multimeter

The manual you sent me says to check the resistance.

Scott, I checked the oil valve and it was surprisingly clean. I wiped it down and re-installed it. I'm going to check the crank and cam sensor tonight when I get to work. Where is that mesh filter you were talking about? I couldn't seem to locate it. There was this bolt I'm assuming, it was bolted on below the oil valve. It had an allan key head, and I stripped it out :( do you know what that is?

That bolt into the block directly below the valve is the cover for the filter housing. The filter is about an inch long and 1/4" in diameter.

Any idea on how to get it out since I rounded it? Also, do they sell them?

Toyota does sell the replacement filters (and the cover bolt), but they are easy enough to clean. If you stripped it you will have to use an extractor to get it out.

Do you have a p/n for that bolt?

Do you have a p/n for that bolt?

I'm not where I have access to that today. Your Toyota parts dept can easily look it up for you.

Right on I'm gonna check that sensor tonight and let you know. Anything else I should check?

I checked the resistance of the camshaft position sensor and I get 1.172k Ω cold. The manual says that is should read 1,630 to 2,740 Ω cold. So maybe the camshaft sensor is keeping it from starting? The first one went bad because of oil and the one from advance was bad all along... The resistance of the crankshaft position sensor is 1.371k Ω cold which is in specs for a good sensor.
