View Full Version : Yet another Foglight install thread

I've read several of the fog light install threads, even seen a Youtube video on one with a really good Combi stalk install using OEM part number #84140-52151 and relay #90987-02027. What puzzles me is why I can't find the OEM or TRD fog light kit. the best I've been able to find is an ebay JDM fog light kit.
Unfortunately, I can't use the switch location for the switch in the JDM kit because I have both the Bluetooth and Toyota VIP alarm indicator use the otherwise vacant spaces in the center console for the 2009 MY.
So the plan is to have a pro install the JDM kit with the Combi stalk and Toyota relay, as I'm not up to dealing with the clock spring to remove the steering wheel/airbag assembly.
Has anyone else done the fog light install using the combi switch and factory relay? How many hours are needed? I ask because my "pro" does not know and I'd like an guessimate before commiting the funds to buy the parts.

This is how I installed my switch (and how the Micro Image plug and play foglight kit was setup):

If you use a switch (or the OEM combination stalk) and the OEM relay, the only other thing you need is a set of the pins for the under-hood fuse box connector to install any set OEM style.
The attached PDF shows the install of the Micro Image kit. Following this procedure the installation should not take more than 2 hours.

I have never seen the JDM kits or their install docs, so I am not sure.

Still have not heard back from Garm. I did find something interesting though, the Toyota part number for the Wiring harness with fog lights. 82112-52430 where as the one without foglights is 82112-52420.

Hey, I know it's not 100% correct but when I installed my wires from my fogs into the fuse box I used one normal push-on-lug and it slid very snugly over the 2 pins in the fuse box. It's been a year and no problems and I just used the rear fog light (which I never use) relay and moved it to the front fog lights relay position. But we rarely ever have foggy days :iono:

I got the kit from Garm and just wanted to double check. Not all the wires from the switch are needed to be connected? Just wondering what the green and brown wires are for?

They are for the LED of the switch itself. You're supposed to splice them into the dimmer rheostat connector. You can choose if you want to connect them or not, though personally I don't think it's really necessary, because you have an indication in your dashboard whenever you activate your fog lights.

The PDF that I posted above shows the connections for the two light wires. They are to show you where the switch is, not if the lights are on.

So I finally got around to installing the fog lights from Garm and as expected with my luck, they do not work. I connected the lights using yellow with yellow and the gray wire with the beige wire. The ground wire is tight and so are the connections to the fog light themselves. The only possible problem I might see is that one of the wires going into the fuse box came loose when I was installing them, but I clamped it back down and it should be okay.
Would it still be possible to install using a different method? What would happen to the wires that I use the splice connectors on?

In that mode, the headlights need to be on and in low beams for them to light up.

You should check to make sure it is present in the under-dash fuse panel (FR FOG). Also, I assume you added the relay?
You can bypass the switch assembly using a jumper wire (or paperclip) between the yellow and beige wires. If the relay and fuse are installed you should hear the relay click when you jump those two or flip the switch. If you do, then everything inside the car is fine and the issue is under the hood.

There is no fuse. Should be blue 15? Hopefully that is it. Need to go buy. Thanks for the help Ctscott. Hopefully I won't need to bug you about this problem again.
Edit: That was the problem. No fuse. Thanks a million Ctscott for your help and the instructions.

Just realized there is a bit of gap between the lights and covers. Should I be worried about water getting in?

The gap is normal. The lights themselves are sealed.

I think I should take some pictures of what I did! Works like stock and I have had zero problems since I installed them! It's based on the DIY's on here and it's so much easier than going throught the firewall. I have the EBay kit and I just used parts already in the car to make it all happen.

Do post your work...in the absence of the Micro Image kit...there will be more of the junk ebay kits getting installed, and with questions. I kinda fell into that camp when my wife bought me a non micro image kit, not from ebay, but still not the one I wanted. it was a little more work but with help from CTScott, I did it. And by the way, I was fortunate that he did help as those off brand kits, I feel, are a thorn in his ass. But I could be wrong.
