View Full Version : how to get the most out of stock rims?

So I hate that I even have to ask this question, but my tires have died before I've saved enough for new rims. So I need to rewrap the stock rims. I'm sure many of you more stock guys will understand my plight - at high speeds the car can sway pretty badly with the wind. I lose slight traction when I'm turning at higher speeds like on a highway. Going over bumps in the city can make my car slide. Etc. I tried searching but didn't find anything that is a specific answer to this - what should I look for/brands/etc to best fix these issues while still sticking to the stock rim? I saw stuff about stretching, which I know nothing about, but I'm pretty sure that wouldn't help.

Man I wish that was an option. I live in Texas where 70mph high over pass turns are a norm. Its like Mario mart here. Do you know if your rim is the same width?

lol...i drive the crap out of my car , one lower it two rear TRD sway bar and good rubber will help.
You can run the tires i mention on stock rims if u like tho i find for better stability find a rear sway bar i find its the best upgrade one can do.
PS im running 195 55 15s

Yup rear sway is the next mechanical purchase. Haven't had much time with the car yet. Thanks for the tire suggestion. Would you say that they're lower than usual tires this size. As in, is there less air

lower as in lowering springs ...im on Tein's so about 2 inch drop , as for tire pressure i run little above stock at 35 psi.

No it's hard to phrase, but lower as in less air in the tires. Less space from the bottom edge of the rim to the bottom of the tire

why do u want less air ? are u saying 55 vs 60 as in profile of tire.

There's so much wobble, I'm just trying to do what I can to help prevent it.

if u are getting speed wobbel , u may have balance or alignment issue etc best take it to a shop have the car taken for test drive cos it could be lots of things .

... ! Wobble?!
As in, feel or hear vibrations, or feel or see shaking/quivering in parts of the car?

I think what your are saying is you want a stiffer sidewall, and by less air you mean a lower profile tire. As far as I understand it, you need to keep the same outside diameter of the tire to keep everything kosher. So if you want a lower profile, you will need a larger rim, 16,17 or 18. Your option with the stock rims, is to buy a more sporty tire, like was suggested earlier. So get away from the normal passenger tire and grab a sportier model. Also as was mentioned, lowering and a sway bar will do more for the wind drifts and wobbly feeling at speed.

You don't have to go bigger rims.
195\55R15 is close enough to stay with the stock rims.

Ya I think I'm going to go with 195/55 and see how that does. I'm pretty sure it's the widest you can get on stock yaris rims
Get a rear sway bar. You will be shocked by how much it solves your problems.

These sizes will work on the stock steel wheels.
185/60/15 = 23.7 (OEM)
195/60/15 = 24.2
195/55/15 = 23.4
205/55/15 = 23.9
To reduce highway wander, focus on tread design. No aggressive tread patterns and a wide continuous center band work best. With this in mind, as well as silica compound rubber, I've been able to completely eliminate highway wander. I experimented with various tread patterns and with the rear anti-sway bar on and off the car, and it is the tread pattern that corrects the problem.

I'm currently running Kumho Ecsta 4X Ultra High Performance (205/50/16). Excellent handling and very good straight line stability with no highway wander. Quiet, comfortable ride. Great for driving hard around town and very good highway manners.
Previously, I ran:
Zeetex HP102+ Ultra High Performance (205/50/16). Very good handling. Excellent straight line stability with no highway wander whatsoever. Super quiet, comfortable ride. The best tyres I've ever driven at highway speeds.
Nitto NT NeoGen Ultra High Performance (205/5016). Outstanding handling! Terrible straight line stability at highway speeds and ridiculous highway wander! Noisy, snow-tyre like ride. Great tyres to throw the car around corners, but stay off the highway.
Get a rear sway bar and some bad a** tires and hoon the crap out of it. Best case scenario is run summer and winter tires so you can get grip in the right ambient temperature/road condition

I live in Texas as well and know the struggle of interstate driving. I lowered mine about two inches and went to a 195-60 tire and both of those made a huge difference.
