View Full Version : clunk in steering - steering shaft

I've had a clunk in my steering on my '02 Echo for a while now. I've replaced the sway bar end links as they were worn, new struts, regreased strut mount bearings, and replaced inner and outer tie rods.

Everything else looks fine including the control arm and ball joints. When my hand are at 3 and 9 position the wheel moves a bit as well as the steering wheel even when locked. I think the steering shaft is gone and needs replacing, more specifically the yolk sub assembly (u joint).

Does anyone know if I can replace this without dropping the sub frame? And is it accessible from under the steering wheel? Rock auto has the shaft or just the yolk sub assembly which is cheaper. Since I'm assuming just the yolk sub assembly is worn is that an easier part to replace?

Thanks in advance
