New owner, key issue...

Just bought an '07 Yaris. Seller only had one key- black with 4 remote buttons. I got a 'regular' copy of the key, only to find that the keys (including the black remote one) won't open any of the locks- though they do start the car (including the new copy), and the remote unlocks it. I'm guessing this means the car doesn't have the 'immobilizer,' since the copy starts it. But seems weird that the ignition key doesn't open the doors- I assume originally the ignition and doors were keyed the same. I don't like the idea of not being able to open the car if the battery in either the key or the car dies.... Wondering how hard it is to get the cylinders out of the doors, then maybe I could take them to a locksmith and have it set for the key(s) I have to work...? And in the meantime I'm ordering another remote key and hoping the tutorial here will get me through programming the remote to work with the doors.

That is very odd. The car must have had the ignition switch replaced, hence the keys working in it but not the doors. It may be possible to have the cylinders repinned, or you may be able to get Toyota to cut you some new door keys from the VIN. You would have to carry a second key that way, but it would be a whole lot cheaper/easier.

This may be kinda silly but do any of the keys at least lock the doors?

My 2007 yaris sedan only unlocks the doors only if you lock them first.

Meaning put the key in the door key hole.
Right turn then left turn in a steady motion. I think. It's right to left.

Passenger side door on my car unlocks all four doors.
Driver Side only locks or unlocks the driver Side door.

I'm the third owner of my 07 yaris sedan and it only came with metal keys.

Though they do have power locks and windows.
I just dont know if it came with remote access.

Any ideas. I'm thinking of calling the dreaded dealership.

With my keys i can't open the trunk.

That is really odd. Personally I would take it to a reputable dealership. My 07 with power locks work the same on both sides and the trunk opens with my keys fine.

I just talk to the dealerships parts department.
I told them that the car starts with just a metal key.

I think toyota makes valet keys that only open the doors and turn the car on.

I asked them how much would it cost me to make a master key. They told me $17.

If your car is smart then it would cost $80 for the smart key and $120 to program it.

Good news i dont have that smart key package.

Give the dealership your vin and they should be able to help you with what kind of key you need.

Well, I went to the local dealer to see about getting a key cut from the VIN. The guy behind the counter thought it seemed unlikely the ignition would've been replaced and said 'Lemme check it out....' He put more force into turning the key than I did (or would've dared...) and got it to unlock. Turns out all of the lock cylinders were seized up, but with enough force they all work with the key I've got. He said its a fairly common problem with the remote lock system as the lock cylinders never get used. Anyway, leads me to another question..... what should I use to lubricate them (and can I do it from the outside.....)? Working the key back and forth in the cylinders has loosened them up a little bit, but they're still pretty stiff.

Call up a lock smith and ask them what they use.

I don't know what to use.
Just don't use wd-40.
You need some kind of grease i think.

Lock cylinders should be lubricated with graphite. It's messy so be prepared to clean it up. If they're seized, you could start with a little WD-40 to loosen them, but you need graphite to keep them lubed as WD-40 is a very short lived lubricant.

You can get graphite in both spray cans and in small dry squeeze tubes that you squeeze into the cylinder. Both should work well. The squeeze tubes can usually be found with all the keys and accessories where you get keys cut, and the spray cans in the lubricants aisle of any hardware store.

If sedan is same as hatch then;

Passenger side one twist rearward unlocks all doors.

Driver side one twist rearward unlocks only driver door. Two twists rearward unlocks all doors.

The more i know about opening my doors thank you.

I am the third owner and would have never guessed that i have to turn twice to the left on the driver's side door to open all doors.
