So I'm cleaning house today and come across the 2006 Buying Guide from Consumer Reports, and not only is the Echo highly recommended, but this is their exact quotes. Funny how they've changed their tune to the same spec'd Yaris. "The Echo is a surprisingly roomy car. The 1.5 liter engine provides very good fuel economy. Handling is fairly responsive and secure, but body roll is pronounced. Antilock brakes can be hard to find. A redesign called Yaris arrives in 2006."

Not bad at all. And today they can't stand the Yaris. Funny isn't it. Actually more sad.

Very interesting. Surprisingly roomy = my first and forever impression of Yaris 2nd Gen hatches. The ECHO....not so much. You're right, the 'review differences'.... sad. Consumers would probably get more down to earth and relevant reviews in 2015 if they had the same reviewers they had in 2006 .

Gimme cheap, reliable/bombproof, manual transmission, and hand-crank windows. That's all I want. Unfortunately, there aren't too many of us that want that!

Dont worry Edmunds trahed the ECHO plenty in those years.

But if you read the owners comments they largely raved about the car.
