I have a 2007 Yaris, sorry don't know anything about the engine type, or any other details. Today out of the blue it started idling really rough as soon as I start it, and doesn't want to accelerate. The engine light is on.

It got up to about 20 and then I floored it and it reluctantly got up to around 30 and then I floored it again and it downshifted and finally got to around 40 and then I stopped pushing it cuz I was afraid I was doing damage.

It revs up just fine when it's in neutral.

I googled and also did a search here and got some ideas...

I replaced the ETCS fuse and that didn't help. I'm borrowing a friend's code scanner thingie tonight and will come back here with the results. I'm also looking into cleaning the throttle body (if I can figure out how), and cleaning the MAF (did that successfully on a Buick once so I'm feeling confident about it).

Any other ideas?

My engine light didn't come on yet on my 2007 yaris.
How many miles you got.

And how's you charging system meaning the battery and alternator and is their any acid eating at the battery cables.

I know your problem isn't what i suggested but please let us know what that check engine light code is first and will go from their.

Go to an auto parts store and have the code read, oonce we know the code it will be much easier to help you.

Sounds like a bad spark plug coil though. If it is its an easy fix

Engine code is PO301, cylinder 1 misfire. I've sprayed starter fluid near/at the intake, no leak. Going to the parts store to get new plugs now. Anything I should try before shelling out for plugs?

Check the condition of the plug. Or go get a tune up.

I thought I'd switch the #1 and #2 plugs/coil packs to see if I got a code for the #2 cylinder now. That's exactly what happened, I now have a PO302 code. Replaced the plug, still have the code so I guess it's safe to say it's the coil pack. Gonna order it online for $18 cuz Advance wants $100 for theirs!!

Am I missing anything or does this sound right?

If it's not the same google it.

A new coil pack should fix the problem. Since the misfire followed the coil pack when you moved it that confirms the problem area. Fwiw I always add dielectric grease to any connector when I am reconnecting it. I'd highly recommend it to the end of the coil packs as well as the upper connectors

This is going to sound silly but.. check that everything from Intake > Throttle Body is secure and isn't loose.
