I've got an annoying squeak coming from the shifiting linkage when going in and out of 3rd. Any recommendations on something I can spray on the link to lubricate it that won't damage/deteriorate the (what looks like) rubber bushings in the linkages? Plain old WD40? Penetrating oil?

There is a big thread on this site somewhere that'll show you exactly where to spray some grease. It's in the linkages of the gear lever underneath the air box. It'll blow your mind how easy of a fix it is.

Use lithium grease. Just have someone move the shifter about while you peer down past the airbox toward the tranny. You will see the moving parts. The junction on the right shaft is the culprit. Spray Lithium Grease there in each gear position, a couple times a year. A 10 second fix.
