View Full Version : Vent knob cable

I've read all of the threads pertaining to the vent knob/switch, a/c switch, defroster switch, etc..., and have found that the reason the knob was not working was due to the thin cable popping out of the plastic circular assembly. I put the cable back in place, but when I turn the know the rectangular metal block connecting the wires on the inside of the circular assembly is sliding towards the inside of the switch which gives too much slack on the cable, which subsequently comes out again.

Does anyone have a picture of the knob/switch showing the complete assembly? I'm wondering if there's a clip that should be holding that rectangular block in place (as it does have grooves along the bottom 1/2. Thanks in advance!

same thing happened with my car with the vent control knob. but i can't seem to get that rectangular block part to stay in that slot it's supposed to be in. Am I supposed to disassemble the knob?

Howdy all!
Ever since I've had my 2007 Yaris Hatchback, the vent control knob has been "sticky." Difficult to turn. Until yesterday, I've been able to "work it loose." Last night, leaving work, it finally came undone. As usual, I was able to find the answer on how to fix it here. After I took mine apart, I noticed I had a bit more of an extensive issue. Apparently the cable cover broke off in the "holder" and the cable is now free. See picture.

You can see some of the brown cable cover still in the clip. Now the cable loop can pretty much come out of the control at will.

I need to know 2 things:

What is the PN of this cable?
Is there a post on this forum that details replacing this cable? I looked for a bit in the service manual last night and didn't see what I was looking for.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Russ

Was wondering if 5590952120 was the right part number for this cable? Mine is a 2007 Yaris Hatchback.

Also, in the service manual, is there a section that describes how to take the old one out and install the new one?

Thanks,
Russ

Hi Cigar..

I have the same issue with my 2008 Sedan.. the issue is , trying to disconnect the other end of the unit from the HVAC housing.. its a very very tight fit for my case.. Not sure if the hatchback uses the same HVAC housing.. you might want to check on this first..

I ordered the part. Was $36 to my house. As long as I don't have to remove the dash... I can remove radio, glove compartment etc. I'll report back!

Sucks to hear this. Small 4-slider HVAC control panels of my high miles outdoor living winter suffering circa 1990 Tercel and Corolla were/are smooth and service free.

Any chance to be in the shop with a cold one and a cigar!

Update:
FINALLY got started on this yesterday. This is where I ended up when I realized, much to my chagrin, that I accidentally ordered the wrong part.

I MEANT to have ordered a 55906A. What I THINK I did was order a 55909A.

The two pictures below show either end of the cables. On both, the one on the right side is the one that I just removed from the car.

Thus far, this has proven to be a project that SHOULD have been much easier. Not sure how any engineer thought this was acceptable.

More as I have it.

Late to the party, but I'm on my 2nd farmer hack/fix to this similar problem. '09 Yaris Sedan. Selecting the windshield in cold weather is hard. So hard the strain blew the cables out like yours.

Last time I was able to shim the sheath back into the control and hold it in place with a bit of tin, crazy glue and a zip tie. That lasted a few years. And this week it sprung open again.

I'm not tearing my dash apart in an unheated garage in January in Winnipeg. Not even if we are above normal temperatures. :-)

After some contemplation, I'm trying magic wrap. After getting the control line re-wrapped back on the dial, I took some pictures. I had contemplated trying to just shorten the control lines - but while debating how to secure them together like that little brass thing does, I thought about just trying to wrap it all.

So I cut the tabs off that hold something I've never had/seen (ie: they're useless at this point), and then wrapped in magic wrap.

Here's hoping it holds at least another couple winters.
