Looks like Toyota is thinking about a hot hatch turbo Yaris for production. I doubt we will see it in US even if it does come to be.

Wow. A nice silver lining to all the talk of the Yaris going away in the US. It very well may, but this is cool to think about.

They have to introduce a production run of the turbo model Yaris otherwise they could not have it in WRC. The official word is that they will meet the minimum 250 units, but they will be released in the European market and none in the US or Canada due to emissions requirements being so stringent as well as CAFE for mpg. The latest craze of internet sites releasing stories is really just a way to grab attention and readership as this original information has been out there for a long time (think upwards of a year). The production version is said to produce 240bhp (not whp) and I haven't seen any torque numbers nor what the level of boost will be to accomplish the power ratings nor which mill they will be using. I would be very surprised that they would be using a 1nz again as it is an aged mill. They would want to move forward with a new mill as they plan on participating in WRC for several years again.

Hey, no one thought we'd see the focus RS come to North America but that is happening. Knowing toyota, they will want a piece of the market that belongs to the fiesta. Also, ive also read in numerous places that car manufacturers are almost loosing money producing cars like the yaris as sales are dwindiling. I would imagine a yaris on steroids would garner some more attention to the yaris segment and possibly boost sales. Hey, they've gone as far as to use the yaris platform for wrc over any other toyota/scion, clearly they have invested their time and money into the yaris name. I say, we will see a boosted rally inspired yaris come our way.

In the current Toyota/Scion line up, what would you say is a better rally car? I would think Yaris hatchback straight away.

I agree. But apparently the scion fr-s almost became their rally car for wrc as there was huge push in favour of the fr-s from the development department.

That would have been nuts.

Lots of haters in the comment section of that article.

I would honestly be shocked if that car ever made it to North America - especially the USA.

Me too, here's to dreaming :drinking:

I may need to hold off on my idea to put a turbo on until this rumor is confirmed.

I wrote a bit about this on 10/31.

If it happens, I'll be you we don't see it in the U.S.

I recently completed my initial ownership survey with Toyota, and at the end they asked what I like about my current Yaris mainly, what I disliked mainly, and what new features I would like to see in the future.

The only things that really popped to mind on new features was +25-30 added horsepower, to the SE version if nothing else, and more color choices. I also mentioned not skimping on the added finishing details, like omitting the polished exhaust tip from the 2015 SE (tacky, tacky).

The base model Yaris meets the FIA homologation requirements, they don't have to build a production turbo model for sale. The WRC motor is a 1.6 direct injected, if they call it a 1NZ its in name only. The Yaris does not sell enough units worldwide to justify the cost of special model, wont happen.

I get what you are saying, but according to all of the information that I have read they have to sell at least 250 units of the build in order to participate in the world level. That was why they had the Celica limited edition version they sold. :iono:

Things have changed a lot since the Celica days. The FIA will let it in based on the current road going car that is already on sale.
