My 2008 Yaris has 137,000 miles on the odometer. For the first time, it began to rattle intermittently in the rear of the interior. The sound was like a harmonic buzz of hard plastic vibrating against thin sheet metal. It was driving me crazy.

I found the source of the noise. It was the plastic cover over the high-mount brake light. I removed the plastic cover and found that it has four pegs that touch the metal hatch. I installed short pieces of rubber windshield washer hose on the pegs to insulate them, reinstalled the cover, and the buzz went away.

Refer to part number 81977 in the attached drawing. To remove it, pry out the two plastic plugs, remove the screws underneath, grab the plastic cover, and snap it off. Flip it over and you'll see the four pegs mentioned above. These appear to be the culprits

Awesome, I did the same thing a while back.. You can actually see where it makes contact with the hatch from all the "light taps" :P
