I've been told CVTs don't have a torque converter, but it seems to creep forward when you let go of the break like a torque converter would.

Thankfully, the US and Canadian versions don't use the CVT.

Yes - The CVT does still have a torque converter.

They don't use a belt, they use a chain.

you need a way to smooth out the changing ratio, absorb shock and also give it the ability to idle in gear. A clutch would make it too harsh.

Makes sense. But then, why not just stick with regular auto transmissions? :iono:
Do other cars with CVTs use TCs?

Because a CVT can give you infinite gear ratios. So your always getting the best efficiency, or the most power when needed.
Not sure how others do it, but I'd imagine they're all similar.
Just remember all modern torque converters have a locking clutch to hold them so they don't slip when they don't require to.

Those who criticise them have quite probably never driven one. Used because they are far more efficient than a "conventional" auto. In fact the official fuel consumption figures have the CVT achieving a better mpg figure than a manual. See 1st line of post no. 9.
I'm getting a consistent 50 miles/(Imperial) gallon.

I think one thing an auto trans can do better than a CVT is handle more hp. Yes? No?
Toyota engines and transmission on average last longer and are more reliable on average than other brands in my experience. But there isn't enough public experience with CVTs to reach a conclusion as to their life. Its possible the engineers who test them know. I think I remember automobile writers saying when they came out that they wont last as long. But then again, many of these same people think a 9 speed auto trans gets better mpg than a 3 speed.

I drove the Honda Fit CVT... and it was an absolute dog! The Nissan Versa Note CVT was even worse. I drove the Toyota Corolla LE CVT and it was a far better driving experience than either the Honda or Nissan. But, the Corolla L with 4-speed automatic performed so much better than LE with the CVT, and that was the single most important reason I purchased the L model. Yes, the LE got a little better gas mileage, but the price differential and driving experience wasn't worth it IMHO.

This is a simple explanation of it from the service manual:
The continuously variable transaxle (CVT) assembly mainly consists of the following: a pulley and belt unit as a shift mechanism, a planetary gear unit as a forward/reverse switching mechanism, a torque converter, a differential, a CVT fluid warmer to keep the CVT fluid temperature optimal, an oil pump and a valve body unit for hydraulic control.

I guess technically it is a belt then, except metal.
I've also been told it is actually pushed and not pulled. Does the repair manual say anything as to that?
