View Full Version : Yaris 2015 Cruise Control & ASL
And ASL stands for The Adjustable Speed Limit. Hello to everyone, this is my first thread I ever made, anywhere.
Big "thank you" to CTScott, who inspired me to make things his way.
I own Yaris 2015 1.33-VVTi Active 1NR-FE that comes in package without Cruise Control and ASL. And that's what I thought...
After thoroughly examination of Cruise Control threads here on YarisWorld, I had to test is Cruise Control System really there (clutch Start and End position switch factory installed).
So after short connecting pins 3 & 4 (z7 connector under the steering wheel airbag) I got the Cruise Control light on.
56564
56591
Green light to obtain stalk . I knew if there was Cruise Control hidden, there has to be speed limiter (ASL) as well. This is a nice feature for local driving where you can easily overdrive and then... I found almost nothing about this feature on the internet (for Yaris and on forums). It's command button is located on steering wheel's right side.
56551
First I had to make sure that wire for ASL exist. In diagram, it is light green wire on position 11 of F5 connector. Since this is a manual transmission, shift pad installation is not present.
56552
And again, using CTScott's method of examining the F5 connector hidden under the steering wheel cover, there it was, light green wire on pos. 11.
56565
56553
After short connecting pins 11(ASL) and 2(ECC) I got the ASL light on (with ignition switched to ON)
56592
Looking at the diagram, and later by examining pins, position 11 goes to position 4 of the z-2 connector in steering wheel, but of course, no wiring
56563
56555
I was really hoping that there was a hidden button on the PCB, but of course there is not...
To make this work, you need complete set of wiring and steering commands that is sold as a one part and price...
56556
56557
56558
Position is present but no wire. They could supply those LED's too, Nissan Micra has them... Btw this yellow ECC connects to the pin5(z2) that connects to the empty pin 12(f5)???
56559
Considering the investment and to find it second hand (holy Grail is more common to find) I was saying goodbye to ASL .
And then I thought, how to implement ASL into the CC stalk?
What I intend to do is to install a small push button in front of the stalk, (bit bigger and black)
56562
pull the wire and then use pins 1 and 4 of z7 connector. (Pin 2(z7) is the horn as well as the blue wire pin 1(z2))
56561
To make this work, I will have to move the light green ASL wire from the pin 11 to the empty pin 7 of f5 connector.
56560
Pin 7(f5) connects to pin 1(z7) and pin 4(z7) is already ECC.

Nice!
The stalk has no space for an extra switch. I would either look for a junkyard steering wheel with the ASL switch present or maybe add the switch someplace on the dash or steering column cover instead.
So there isn't any space inside of this part of the stalk? What is inside? I was hoping to install this type of pushbutton. It requires 12mm hole (less if you put thread on) and goes 9mm in depth when pins are bent.

While I'm awaiting for my stalk to arrive and figuring out how and where to install that 5th switch for the ASL function, I spotted that there is a stalk on the market with "mode" option. For me, that would be the best solution to use as the ASL switch.
What I also spotted is that any stalk has three pins. What I would like to know, if anyone knows, is there a fourth "empty" movement toward the instrument panel on the normal stalk, and will it make a connection on the middle stalk pin?
Anyway, this is my final option, to use this middle pin, with oncoming stalk, or with the new one with "MODE" option.

Stalk has arrived and I can confirm that all our stalks are four axis joysticks with locked fourth movement toward instrument panel.
Everything inside is completed in the factory, you just have to cut three small plastic locks that prevents stalk to move 4-axis.
And yes, it is momentary switch that connects to pin 2 on the stalk side. Cheers.

Forgot to mention, as a third wire I took two unused from steering column (because of female terminals), but much better is to obtain another cable, it's plus 3$.
56739
Finally, everything went as planned.
Cruise Control and Speed Limiter in one stalk, minimal investment.

Nice! I just did this using a replacement button pad on the steering wheel - see the other thread on 2012+ cruise control...
Your solution is a good alternative if getting hold of the factory button pad is proving difficult, which it certainly was for me...

Yes indeed is difficult. At the moment (Mar-03-2016) there is one on ebay. I had the same experience with dealers (What?, Why?, it is impossible to retrofit that...)

HI guys.... I want the ASL button for my steering wheel but want to pay minimal.
This is quite hard to come by and I use speed limiter a lot in work hire cars.
When I get Bluetooth phone calls I ALWAYS pick up and hang up from the touch&go and not the steering wheel buttons.
So for £free I am thinking to switch couple pins around and set either the "call answer" or "call end" button to activate the speed limiter. What do you think?
PS great info.... could not be able to do myself without the above wiring diagrams.
If someone can find me a switch or a part number which I can try and ask toyota for, it would be better as I'm a massive OEM fan.

What's ones opinion on soldering on my own "tactile switch"?
I have couple spare wire pins from an old project (added OEM reverse cam to my audi s3 too) to make my own additional wire. Soldering looks relatively simple.

First, I would like to strongly advise you to force yourself with usage of steering wheel phone commands. It was very stupid from Toyota to leave this touch screen phone commands available while the car is moving. But...
Of course, you can use one of these buttons, but you will have to remove one of two resistors on pcb and make a short connection on its place.
You can also modify your cruise control stalk, and that is completely free, as you would like it to be. And it works perfectly.
If you are the OEM fan, there is complete part China made that you just plug in place. There is no separate button as a part, you buy complete set of commands, together with wirings and connector. With this part you don't have to change place of ASL pin.

Yes, if your car isn't under some kind of warranty, you can solder it, or put some nice switch on the existing blind button cover. If your pins are not suitable for Toyota, you can find them here: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1674311-2-RCPT-NONSEAL-TYP-2-0-64III/32571018766.html?spm=2114.13010608.0.0.UQFBzg

Thanks for the quick reply. Why do you think I need to remove one of the two resistors? Would the ASL button not need a resistor?
It's also a shame about the LED lights.
Thanks again.

No, the ASL works as a direct I/0. You may try without removal of resistors. Maybe it will still work.

Wait, If I have a 2014 without the steering wheel buttons for the phone, can I add it? Is there just a connector under the steering column?

HI Gagi.... I did try have a look yesterday and you are right... cannot use the Bluetooth telephone button. The wiring goes to the other buttons on other side of wheel before connecting to the main harness on the steering wheel.
I have measured the tactile switch which seem to be 8x8 smd tactile switch but seems hard to find too. Looks pretty easy to solder on but will either keep a look out for cheap switch with ASL or find a cheap steering wheel from breaker and unsolder a switch. I do like your DIY but I've become "as close to OEM" kind of freak hahaha.

Ok Gagi, where did you get all these nice diagrams? I searched Google for days and cannot find any wiring diagrams for the 3rd gen.
On toyota-tech.eu after registration for free account, you can buy access to various diagrams, manuals etc.
You can buy from one hour to one year. In my opinion, the best is one day subscription because you will have to learn how to scroll, search, save what you intend to.
Upon entering your VIN you will have filtered access to specific manuals and diagrams for your car.
Many of them you can save as pdf, but some you will have to save as full HTML.
So if you really want diagrams, spare one sleepless day and one more for your rest.

Thank you @Gagi Thank you so much for helping me to fix ASL.
Thank you @CTScott for the wonderful tutorial How to connect cruise control
What I did
1. Bought cruise control stalk and ASL switch from ebay
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171121/e12d58fdd861cffeb376d979b76403c5.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171121/dcd5bf228c442d763ec827447320a397.jpg
2. Connected cruise control stalk and plug the cable
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171121/64012470ce1af94056ab11443b6f397b.jpg
In my case Cruise control is just plug and play
3. Installed ASL switch and added a green cable from ASL and connected the other end to 2nd pin of z2 connector
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171121/6ad8563ec310254db8031b14a641f456.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171121/2ec9dbdec35acff6071c3560b1ed7030.jpg
* Tried ASL but unfortunately it was not working.
4. With help of Gagi found a solution to short the yellow cable that is connected to z2 connector pin 1 to black cable that is coming from cruise control stalk.
So first removed the Yellow cable from z2 connector
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171121/aace9c427f4bcc1022a373a8b324d433.jpg
Then short that with black cable from cruise control that is going to z7 connector

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171121/b63b1efb45e0fc23b0951dc246e75571.jpg
5. ASL is working
* Before removing yellow cable for short with black cable make sure it is not connected with any cable on the connector that is located on the back side of steering wheel.
