I have a 2003 Yaris 1.0. I've owned it for about a month and used it to get to work and back. I went to goto work on tuesday morning, put the key in and turned it. The engine turned over twice then made a loud clunk. after that whenever i turned the key it just clunked.

After a few days of the car sitting there i went out and had a little play and try to work out whats going on. I put the car into first and rolled it back alittle which rolled the engine back a little bit. Doing this made it possible for the engine to turn over once again but still clunked after 1 turn. Does anyone know what could be causing this issue?

Problem found, snapped valve in cylinder 1 caused it.

Wow a DROPPED VALVE in a TOYOTA! Im 59 and Ive never heard of one. No one and I mean no one has the valve clearances checked on these cars and they seldom need it but I have to believe that caused this. The valve clearances on this type of engine get smaller over times as the valves recess into the head. Then the exhaust valves burn.

But that just affects compression. Maybe nothing to do with a head breaking off. I saw this a lot in old VWs.

Anyone hear of this in a T?

I'm not familiar w/ the 1.0 engine but the only way I can see this is if the timing was quite a bit off or if oil changes were not done which caused the valve buckets/cams to wear.

To put it in perspective last summer I checked the valve clearances on my '02 Echo which has 370k km on it. They were all well within the oem limits.

DYED perhaps u can get an engine from a breaker. They should be cheap.
