So we are halfway into the 2016 year and pretty much my update path for 2015 has been completed so I figured that I would catalog new setup changes in a new thread.
So if you missed the fact that I needed to upgrade my radiator once the built engine was put in and I started putting down at least 240whp/238tq back in 2014 I did a bunch of research and ended up going with a 92-00 Honda Civic 3 core aluminum half rad. My OEM rad/fan was hitting between 230-240° in stop-n-go. The rad over all seems like it is a good choice as my temps across the board dropped about 15°, but I'm not getting the temps I would like to see with the fan that came with it. Cruising at 60-65 she will sit between 180-195° and if in mild traffic in city around 200-205°. In constant yo-yo traffic on roadways it didn't take too long to sit at around 208-212° and then in true stop-n-go city stoplight type traffic she hits 225° and stays there. I have reached out to the site below to verify the mounting dimensions of their kit as I don't have much room to work with anymore with the IC piping and hose for the catch can. I have also picked up a Mishimoto Low Temp thermostat from someone which should help as well. I am thinking that this kit below especially having the shroud that it does will do the trick. Worse come to awful if the fan isn't enough the shroud will accept most universal fans out there so I could go with a different fan, but Honda guys with boosted builds on a bunch of forums have been pretty happy. I had been looking at a Spal or Proform, but to get higher CFMs (over 1k) is tough since those fans are typically almost 4" deep at the back of the fan motor.
92-00 Honda Radiator Fan and Shroud (http://www.slimfan.com/92_Honda_Acura_12_Radiator_Slim_Fan_p/hondashroudfan.htm)
For reference I am using AMSOIL's Heavy-Duty Antifreeze & Coolant and water since it is allowed at venues where I race as the glycol in it is more environmentally friendly than the Toyota pink.

I finally got my Ecliptech iShift Progressive Shiftlight installed and working. Just need to tweak the calibration. I picked it up from MI during their clearance of inventory. To be honest it is so feature rich it is kind of a detractor from the product, but I have it now so will use it.
I decided to not use my Samsung Charge phone anymore as my GPS Speedo and plan on picking up a Speedhut 200mph unit eventually. I am reusing the custom mount I had for the iShift for now. I may end up moving the iShift later. Time will tell.

Will the low temp thermostat affect your tune? Are there any hidden downsides to a low temp thermostat?

Will the low temp thermostat affect your tune? Are there any hidden downsides to a low temp thermostat?
It won't affect the tune at all. As for downsides the only upside is that low load driving will usually see lower operating temps. The biggest downside is that it will cause more wear since you generally sit below normal operating temp during that low load driving. The real results for the cooling system comes with the rad, shroud, and fan. Then lastly water pump if need be.

Lol well you're one of the very few pushing these cars so it comes with the territory. Have you considering a oil cooler for your setup?
fnkngrv
06-10-2016, 01:03 PM
I have considered both an oil cooler and trans cooler for the last few years, but the biggest problem is real estate under the hood at this point. What could be a clever idea would be putting each down under the headlights where I have the openings for the fog lights. It would create drag, but the benefits may be worth it. They are traditionally small enough that I could possibly do it.

How would you go about running a trans cooler on your MT?
fnkngrv
06-10-2016, 01:24 PM
It isn't easy and requires a dedicated pump and other components, but isn't something that I would need unless I decided to get into other types of racing. Nascar and some of the other racing orgs use them to include fuel dragsters. It would most likely be overkill in my situation, but sometimes my mind wanders into crazy ideas :-)

I felt more comfortable replacing them now with the increase in speeds I am looking to attain. Also I had my parking brake fully adjusted out and it wasn't really holding anymore on inclines out of gear. The rotors and shoes cost me $70 so it was cheap enough especially doing them myself.
They made it ten years so as far as I am concerned they had a good service life. You do the type of racing I do and you learn to not take "rule of thumb" to heart for reliability just at its face value.

There have been a few guys that I have talked to that have made the change and they really didn't notice any difference when it came to speed or acceleration. Braking yes, but that is because they went not only disc, by also big brake. To me the cost being several hundred to upwards of a grand isn't worth it. Time will tell.

It has to be a six point for up to 175. Over that will require a full. This one will have the main hoop, harness bar, front and rear legs. Depending I may go with a mid hoop angle leg however that isn't likely at this stage.
It should look something like this:

Roll cage complete. Now to paint. Cage is 100% removable as well. 1 3/4" @ .120 sidewall. Good for up to 200mph. Then would need to go full cage then.

Completely removable, so i assume you're going to bolt it into the car? That sounds almost insane a bolt in cage is rated to that speed, it looks damn good as always.
Hows the comfort of that Kirkey seat? You know you mean business when you have 10+ c16 5 gal tanks sitting in your garage lol
fnkngrv
08-09-2016, 12:22 PM
The cage has the 3/8" thick 6*6 top plats and then 3/8" 6*12 plates under the car. It is a standard setup for many subcompact cars out there. If I seem to have much more speed available then I will most likely go weld in because it will require me to upgrade to a full cage.
We use a ton of fuel each weekend. Carl's Mustang goes through 3-4 gallons alone per pass. Back in 2014 with the previous setup at 15psi I went through a half gallon per pass.

The racing seat isn't too bad. We are quite possibly cutting it and adding in an extra 1.5" because it is pretty snug already without the fire suit. I bought it used from my buddy (seat) for a fraction of the cost and he is only a 28" waist where right now I am a 38".

Had a deer try to jump over the hood of the truck. It laid onto the windscreen and then rolled along the driver's side to the fuel door. $2800 in damages. The last part to get fixed was the two doors which was done yesterday. Can't really tell but there were five heavy dents. Insurance wouldn't replace the door skins even though it would have been cheaper.

Do things like fog lights or even the grille actually increase your top speed mph? I'm curious would removing your front bumper really add to your top speed run, or even slow you down a good bit.
fnkngrv
08-14-2016, 02:47 PM
Bumper removal will slow you down a lot. Having the fog holes open allows that air to pass through and roll over the tire rather than slam into the light housing and effectively cause it to build up a wall and then have to cascade around the bumper.

It is an open design. If you look at the OEM grille it has a lot more restrictive flow due to the plastic accents in it.

Removing the S trunk spoiler gained me close to 4mph. The grille change is mainly for helping to keep temps in check. Not really sure how much difference the lack of the fog lights has made since I have never had them on this body kit.

That is a good question. Just about anyone that doesn't do the type of racing I do has a clue how it works. In order for me to stay in the Production category the seats have to stay in. The only exception is putting in a passenger racing seat for ride along.
Also I pretty much never take any backseat passengers anymore so it really isn't an issue at all for me regardless.

We have the kill switch just about wrapped up. Just need to tie in the alternator kill and will be good to go for this weekend's event. I am not sure if I shared or not, but because of a construction snafu I whacked the hell out of my rear bumper about a month ago. Thankfully for the most part the bumper is alright however it snapped the mounting points for the driver's side tail light. We decided to get creative and I am using the passenger side as the mounting point for my kill switch to save having to punch any holds in the body or trunk lid. This also meant that I can't use the Flaming River switch I had bought. I guess I will just end up listing it on Craigslist. Anyway here is how the kill switch turned out:

Well here is the quick and dirty on the Harvest Event for me:
Been battling fuel filter issues for the bulk of the year. At this point very stumped. Have had an interesting idea presented that the car has sat too much so the fuel that has been in the tank may have separated which can cause rust and corrosion problems for inline components. This tied to tuning issues made life pretty difficult and frustrating. Boils down to the loss of the job in February causing a full halt on progress for too long. Decent head and cross winds didn't help either. Bottom line is that I didn't hit even speeds from 2014 with a more powerful and free flowing setup. Disappointing to say the least. That being said having Dell, Spencer, and Jay there to assist was invaluable. I can't thank them enough. Fun too (even if I didn't show it). Another positive note is that I got to learn what it is like racing in close to full safety gear. I believe all that I would have to add is a Hans device. The car did run pretty well and nothing broke which is always a plus. It amazes me and pretty much everyone else how stout this 1.5l engine truly is. Lastly I got to spend some time with the racing family which I will always cherish. I will miss them all if I don't see them again. Once again thanks go out to #JrtCustoms #HoganTire #BlvdGraphix #DelewareChassisWorks for the assistance and sponsorships. Without them racing for me wouldn't be possible.

Sorry to hear that it's been a rough season. Better that nothing broke, even if a speed record was on the list to break. ;)
