View Full Version : Fusible Link?

So my mother in law was using my car and essentially the power steering, brakes, wipers went. Also issues getting it in gear. A shop near her diagnosed it as the alternator. I replaced the alternator, but foolishly didn't remove the battery to do it. All the symptoms are still there, though this altrernator doesn't tick loudly. So from what I've read the issue is likely the fusible link. It doesn't look blown to my eye. Is there a way to test it? And advice on getting it off. The 2 bolts holding the red and black wires are not budging. Any helpful hints? Thanks.

Managed to get the fusible link out. Nothing looked broke. Seemed to have continuity with a multimeter. Decided to clean all terminals and throw it back in the car. Started it up, no change.

Voltage across bettery with car off = 12.2.
Across battery with car started = 12.2
Across negative battery and black connection on alternator = 12.2

Did I just replace my alternator with a bad alternator?

It does sound like the alternator is not outputting. Did you remember to connect the small connector when you replaced it?

Just had to replace the alternator in my '07, but wasn't having any of the issues you described. If I wasn't so auto-repair-useless, I'd be more help to you lol.

The small snap in connector on the front of the alternator? Yes. I could try reconnecting.

Correct. There is a 7.5 A fuse labeled ALT-S. Check that guy, as he feeds battery voltage to the alternator to act as a reference.

Already checked. I may yard it tomorrow to have the alternator tested. Any other thoughts?

Pull that connector, and with the ignition on, but engine not running check for the following:

Green wire -12 Volts from 10A GAUGE fuse
Blue wire - 12 Volts from 7.5A MET fuse
White wire - 12 Volts from ALT-S fuse
Pink wire is output signal from alternator, so it will not show anything

Green = .14
Blue = 12
White = 10

Replaced all 3 fuses. They all looked fine. But I figured why not? No change.

Took the original alternator to a parts store. Tested fine. Obviously the issue lies elsewhere.

If the green is 0.14 volts, then your problem is likely there. That wire is one of the inputs to the voltage regulator.

So I'm thinking look for power on the other side of the.fuse block, maybe run a new wire. Thoughts?

Correct. The next stop for that wire is CA1 - Pin 1, which is the front right wire on the connector on the top right in this picture:

CA1 color? Or diagram?

And honestly, thanks. I very much appreciate your input

Green, as in the front row, top right connector pictured above.

.14 volts on the back of the connector, green wire. Not sure how that connector pops out so I have not measured the pin...

OK. The next stop is the under dash fuse panel. Did you already check the 10A Gauge fuse under the bottom of that area?

Fuse is intact. And I replaced it to be sure. Did not measure voltage under there. Too dark to do at this point.

OK - 4B-19 is where the wire exits the fuse panel to head under the hood. Check that wire.

Apparently my ecu isn't providing power to a relay rendering half my fusebox dead.

Which fuses are dead?

Which fuses are dead?

Not sure. Wife insisted it get to a shop to be fixed. My car is going in a body shop next week for some cosmetic fixes after a tree fell on it and she didn't want to deal with us both getting to work with 1 car.
