Didn't see an intro place so I figured I'd post here.

I recently purchased a slightly used 2014 Yaris LE with 38K on the clock. It's existence now that I own it will be to take massive amounts of abuse as a "taxi" doing Uber and Lyft rides all over the greater Chicago area. I've ran it one day out there so far and it does pretty all right... not as good on gas as the 2005 Prius it's replacing but it's definitely more comfortable (for me) and more pleasant to drive. I've had some Echos in the past that are still on the road with over 200,000 miles and I'm hoping this little bugger will do the same.

https://scontent.ford1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/13782070_10154376825158545_1015948063017471570_n.j pg?oh=f7d7644abf91413e455e637ea1054b65&oe=581FE2D9

There's a few things about the car I really don't like... the biggest being the fact that the rear seating doesn't really have lighting which I find to be a problem. Second, the lack of variable intermittent wipers for the front and back (which I found apparent fixes for on here) that I want to address. Third, on my old Prius I was able to enable the security system with the TIS but on this car apparently you can't do that unless you have a smart key system which it obviously doesn't have. We ran into this same thing with my buddy's Prius C that he has. Finally, I hate wheel covers so I'll eventually find a set of 15" rims from another Yaris or a Prius C to go on here.

Besides those things (and the resulting car payment for the next 6-ish years) the car seems to be pretty good. I like the seats, it's very comfortable for the 18-20 hour work days I pull in the car. Rear seating is pretty decent for what it is. Plus, it's kind of quirky which is neat. A ton of the reviews I saw said it's so slow and horrible but... ehh... it seems more than adequate for what it's supposed to be.

Anyway, I'll be using this car for the next 10 or 11 years so I'll be scouring the forums here to try to find anything I can to make the car nicer or better. Thanks for having me.

Good luck with your commercial application of your Yaris!:headbang:

But...what what's dodge Aries k all about?:iono:

18-20 hours, wow.

This is the first time I remember seeing someone posting about a Yaris for this type of application. Very cool; thanks for sharing. Look forward to updates about how it holds up for you and mods you do to make it more functional on the job.

Well, the "Dodge Aries K" thing is my username on most forums. Happens to go with the fact I've owned over 100 of those things and have a soft spot for them. Although, I don't have one anymore... just a Dodge Shadow convertible for Chrysler branded products. Got tired of having to fix broken stuff all the time haha.

As for the 18-20 hours, gotta make my hour and a half commute worth it!

Purchase price... too much lol. It was just over 12 grand. Was kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place when my beloved Prius told me it was done (hybrid battery failed to the point it didn't want to really run anymore) so it was retired from service. It didn't owe me anything... I traded a clunker Ram pickup and a almost dead Avalon to this small hillrod dealer for it and put over 30,000 miles on it without really any issues.

The car gets a break this weekend for Lalapalooza or whatever it's called as I'm going to take my Sienna in to get larger groups and bigger fares. Yaris will be back on next week though.

Oh, before I forget, both of my inner fender liners in the front are like... shredded. Is this a common issue on these (the other two door Yaris the dealer had was the same) or is it just a case of bad luck by the not very smart previous owner?

Oh, here's the interior right after I bought it pretty much. Pretty clean inside... I am happy the seats aren't that light color like some of the ones I've seen or like my buddy's Prius C. That light fabric gets nasty dirty waaaaay too quick.

The Japanese built models get the light grey fabric and the cars built in France get that black fabric.

The shredded liners mean that the prior owner ran wider or taller than spec tires or had the car lowered.

Well, the car was from Washington state from what I understand. I'd bet it had chains on it at one point or another. I will have to try to find used liners for it since I don't think the selling dealer will replace them for me.

I had the same issue; my car is a French built LE. The dealer has different part numbers for Japanese and French liners... and the price difference is absolutely ridiculous! However, according to a local dealer (Elmore Toyota, Westminster, CA), the liners are the same. Actually, I've found that many parts have different part numbers (and prices) for French built cars, but are in fact identical to the Japanese parts.

I owned a '87 Plymouth Reliant K. Bought new, was still running when I got rid of it in 2000. Only problem I ever had was a bad MAP sensor that left me stranded once. Not bad for 13 years. Oh yeah the other problem was getting rear ended twice, but that wasn't Chrysler's fault.

So I took the car back to the dealer I bought it from today to pick up the jack they ordered for it (it was missing) and brought the car to their body shop about the wheel liners and the damaged front bumper. The body shop said that the front bumper just needs to be replaced as well as both shredded liners. It's going to cost $850ish but the sealer is willing to cover $530 of it leaving me with a bill of $320. Not the best outcome, but it seems fair since this car did have the damaged bits when I bought it. Plus, I get some POS Chevy loaner car while they work on it. With how much the bumper and liners cost with paint, I figure I couldn't replace them myself for the $300 it is going to cost me... And I can't paint haha.

It will look a lot nicer without all the scuffs and so forth!

The K-car was such an awesome vehicle. It is too bad Chrysler didn't follow them up with anything that was as reliable or practical... One of the reasons I switched to Toyota products. My last Chrysler I have is a 1991 Dodge Shadow convertible with 56,000 miles that I bought from the original owner.

Your's came apart too? Odd. There were three more Yaris's (Yarii?) at the dealer and all three of them had issues with the front bumpers. Granted, they were all fleet cars so I'm sure they were beat but it was kind of sad to see. Fortunately, because of the trouble and the slight imperfections with the bumper cover I didn't have to pay the $300 they wanted me to.

Anyway, they "adjusted" it (most likely glued the hell out of it) and it is staying on now. Hopefully it stays that way.

Slightly unrelated note, one of the Yaris there was a 2015 that has the touch screen radio. I was excited because I want one for mine and I wanted to see what it all did. Turns out, it doesn't do anything special over my car's radio besides having a screen instead of a tiny display. I was hoping for a fuel economy chart like most Toyotas have but when you press the "Apps" button it just comes up with an error message saying Premium Entune Audio not installed or something to that nature.

Okay, so one of my biggest gripes with the car has been the garbage interior lighting. The rear seat is really dark at night time. Well, good ol' Farm and Fleet had these little LED lights for $20 so I dropped the headliner down a bit to get into the roof and put them in.

Muuuuch better. The back actually seems to light up more than the front. They go on and off when the doors or hatch are opened with the dome lights. Not shown, but I also added a homelink auto dimming mirror from a Prius so that way I can open my garage without a separate remote and the automatic dimming feature is nice.

Also tried to install a European leather wheel. That was a failure. Turns out the air bag mounting spots are square instead of round. At least I was able to use the Euro phone and radio controls without any modifications. Nice having the extra buttons on the steering wheel. I have a Japanese market steering wheel on the way that has the round mounting points for the air bag. I pray that will work, otherwise I'm out quite a bit for parts that don't function right haha. It has paddle shifters on it, but I'll be removing them since they won't do anything with my 4 speed automatic transmission, nor do I really want them on it anyway. Still looking for wheels online for the car, just haven't had any luck finding any wrecked 2015 or newer Yarii out this way at all.

On another note, I've put 4000 miles on the car so far. I was sick for a few weeks so I wasn't able to work but it's been great so far. Need to change it's oil this week.

JDM steering wheel works with the USDM air bag and the EDM steering wheel controls. Woo! So I have a leather wheel with telephone and radio controls. Hurray! Also, added a leather shift knob from some Lexus of some sort to the car which I think looks nice.

So now I have spare shifter paddle things that will fit a JDM or USDM steering wheel if anyone is interested in those. I also have a EDM leather wheel that's in really nice shape if someone wants it and can get their paws on an EDM airbag that fits it.

Oh yeah, I really did not like my 2006 Sienna so I traded it in for this...

It's a one owner (used to be owned by a doctor lady) 2008 sedan. It made me kind of sad in a way because you can tell that it's a better built car than it's newer sibling. Didn't overpay this time besides a bit from the difference of what I owed on the crappy minivan and I'm very pleased with it. It's for family/personal use versus the 2014 which is pretty much work only. Now, to modify some of the things on it that I'm not fond of like that garbage "integrated" audio system, icky plastic wheel covers (one is damaged), and yucky plastic steering wheel. I figure if I ever get my paws on the touch screen radio for my 2014, I can use the radio from that along with the microphone assembly from a wrecked car in the 2008 which would be awesome since I'd gain bluetooth and a better amplifier all at once.

Oh yes... this happened today. Got it for $140 shipped (more than I wanted to spend but... ehhhhhh...) and it was plug and play super easy. I like the functionality a lot more than the old radio as of yet plus it makes the car appear to be a little more "high end" than it is. Now I just need to find the "expansion module" so I can add Entune and the GPS. From what I found, I think if I buy a touch screen radio from a Prius C (which I found for a bit less than what I paid for this) and take it's module I should be good. We'll have to see at some point.

Dodge Aries K

Well, forget the touch screen. The bluetooth phone call thing is absolutely horrendous. So much static, cutting out, and distortion that it's unusable. So back to the unit it came with for now. I don't know if the unit I got is just defective (probably, knowing my luck) or if all these touch screen units have issues when the phone is close to it.

Dodge Aries K
10-26-2016, 03:30 PM
Exchanged unit arrived and it works perfectly. Hurray... again haha. So yes, touch screen for me. I want to find another one of these units for the 2008.

Dodge Aries K
11-11-2016, 06:10 PM
So a friend of mine got a touch screen radio for his Prius C. Borrowed the "Extension Box" and... nothing. It doesn't work with this radio even though it plugs in fine. It might be because the software was outdated but I'm not really 100% sure. After seeing the navigation system on his car now though, forget it. Horribly slow and unpleasant to use. Plus, I have to use my phones for navigation anyway due to the nature of my job. If I can get a compatible box cheap enough I'll do it, but it's not a priority in any way.

One of the nice things about getting the radio for his car, I was able to get a microphone assembly and a USB/Aux plug from a Prius C for my 2008 Yaris. Now, unfortunately I had to cut the cables so I'm hoping to be able to solder them back together for the aux and USB, but if they work that will be cool. Ended up getting the proper faceplate thing from a wrecked 2012 Yaris sedan at a junkyard for $10 so that was a good step in the right direction. To save money, I'll be using the stock radio from my 2014 Yaris in there. Just have to order the antenna adapter and then I'll be able to get the new radio installed into the car and add the microphone to the factory spot up by the map lights so then the phone will work too.

So far, the 2014 has done almost 8000 miles of taxi duty without any issues besides the rear carpeting. I'm currently fighting with Toyota about it but chances are since it's out of warranty they won't care at all. I looked at a 2013 recently (Japanese built) and it didn't have the same issue... which I told them on the phone... so we'll see if they'll at least supply non defective carpeting for the car. Otherwise, I've come up with a way to make it not be so bad if I have to.

Don't know how the Gen3 is assembled, but on the Gen2 there is a cable clip underneath the plastic trim panel running along the door sill. Incorporated into this clip is a little hook onto which the carpet looped.

Dodge Aries K
11-12-2016, 01:08 AM
It has those, I checked to make sure they're hooked on it already. I had to take all that stuff apart when I dropped the headliner down some to add the map lights and I made sure they were all hooked where they're supposed to be. It literally wouldn't have been an issue if they added maybe half an inch to the carpeting on each side before they cut it so it had some give but would stay under the trim.

11-24-2016, 04:59 AM
Well, I did a thing today. Due to the airbag recall (and more so due to the fact that it wasn't disclosed to me before I bought the car) I ended up giving my 2008 Yaris back to the dealer I bought it from. They gave me the amount of the loan (which included the loss I took on trading in my crap Sienna) towards another vehicle so it was replaced with a 2013 Hyundai Elantra sedan for carting the family around. It's a 6 speed manual and only has 42,000 miles on it so it's not a bad car by any means... but it's boring old silver.

https://scontent.ford1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/15107311_10154758601178545_3880060796171520621_n.j pg?oh=b1ff295d486041e461a9a4d77fa5de3b&oe=58D4532E

I will really, really, REALLY miss my little Yaris sedan. Stupid Takata junk.

On the other hand, my wife will most likely be trading in her 2008 Prius for a 2012 Yaris L 5 door this weekend so that's a good thing! Her Prius has been a good car but it got wrecked and once they're wrecked they're never the same...

Congrats...again lol.

Not to be a downer, but I can't help but feel like the Takata situation should be resolved soon. I've seen at least one report from someone here on the forum that got it taken care of. I truly hope it goes well for you and that you don't have to use that monster warranty they offer.

Dodge Aries K

Well, the Toyota dealer here told me that it wouldn't be getting fixed for at LEAST a year since we're Zone B where I live. There's a Scion xB at the dealer waiting to get fixed right now... it's been there since June. The tires are flat now from sitting and I'm sure the brakes and other things are junk. It just didn't sit right to me to pay for a car that I bought for my family that I couldn't use to carry my family.

I will not give up my Yaris, Takata or not. I think it's more likely to win a giant jackpot or get hit by lightning than to have an airbag explode.

I'm with you in that I don't let anyone sit in the front passenger seat. I'm a red zone, so why take a chance. We just use my better half's Honda if we both need to go somewhere. Rather be safe than sorry.

Should be bringing this little guy home on Monday. Wife is trading in her Prius (parked next to it) for it. It's a 2012 Yaris L. Base model baseness. Fortunately for her, I have a bunch of random crap to give it such as the old radio from my car (Bluetooth and HD radio), cruise control stalk thing, radio control buttons, a keyless entry/remote starter thing that I have chilling in a box, and the Lexus leather shift knob that I had previously installed in my old 2008 Yaris.

I love the way those fog lights work but something is wrong with them (it's an aftermarket kit) so I'll have to square that away too. I want to take them for my car but she won't let me. I am totally swapping my scuffed up wheel cover off my car onto the other one. She'll never know haha.

Nice! I love that color. Isn't it great how you can just plug in a cruise control switch to a base model car, and it works? I bought a stalk from CTScott long before I got my own Yaris, for a friend's car, and I was amazed at how it took all of five minutes to add a feature many cars at this price point don't even offer.

What I'm hoping for is that the car body is prewired for power windows. There's a junkyard that has a few of these things and if it IS wired for it then the car will be getting power windows instead of the roll up stuff and probably power mirrors as well. They'll also have the bluetooth microphone that I'll need and the missing cup holder insert I need as well.

So after having the "new" 2012 Yaris for a few days there's only been one complaint. Something plastic-y rattles like a son of a gun when it's in gear and you're not moving. Putting it into park or once you start moving it stops doing it. Any ideas?

I'm experiencing a rattling exactly as you described with my 2013 @33k miles. I suspect it's maybe an exhaust thing - sounds like a loose cowling or something. It seems to only happen after warmed up and hot, because I don't hear it when I first start or even drive a few blocks and stop.

Any new info on your end? When I have time to investigate mine further I will let you know.

I talked with a Toyota tech who said the heat shield on the exhaust is just a thin sheet and is glued on, and if that adhesive breaks down you'd hear a rattle. I've not confirmed this is the issue with mine, but it's a clue to consider. Too cold to get under mine right now too. :)

Well, I've put 10,000 miles on my little taxi cart now. Besides the previously mentioned carpeting being stupid, it's been (knock on wood) 100% reliable.

Six months, using it basically one (long) day a week for work. I'm hoping it lasts a long time.

One thing I have noticed though is I need to keep an eye out for a spare center console for it... once it's done with it's taxi duties. Since they, for some reason, made the console stick out into the rear feet area it's taken a lot of kicks and scuffs. I don't care currently because that's the car's job in life, but once it's retired I don't want that scuffed up garbage in there. Any ideas on how to protect it from getting any worse?

Well, those rear LED lights I put in finally both bit the dust. That didn't last long. The one just went really dim and the other one finally started flickering like crazy and then went out. Waste of $20. I'll have to find some sort of other light I can stick in the same spot that takes a normal bulb that's replaceable like maybe a small trailer clearance light or something. I almost thought about putting in a center dome light like the older Yaris has in the back but I really am uncomfortable with cutting holes in the headliner.

So, because Hyundai is garbage... I ended up trading it in last week.

https://scontent.ford1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-0/p526x296/16825892_10155073359668545_4154163369064835600_o.j pg?oh=e0c01914b2224725531a99ad39edcbe0&oe=592E8806

It was such a horrible car that I didn't even care about the substantial loss I took trading it in and I wouldn't wish that car on anyone.

On a positive note, I traded it in for a 2016 Yaris L 3 door. The dealer had it sitting around for over a year and nobody even test drove it once... it had 18 miles of shuffling around the dealer and had 23 miles after the test drive. I got a really awesome deal on the car... which basically absorbed the negative equity on the Korean turdbox. It's actually at the dealership (Toyota of Naperville... really nice place) right now getting some things done to it...

I had the rear spoiler added to the car which I think looks fantastic. The guy at the dealer who installed it told me he's never actually put one of these on a Yaris before haha. I also ordered the body side moldings so they will get put on this week I believe. I plan on keeping the thing basically forever so I figure the moldings and spoiler would help it stand out against other Yaris's plus the moldings will hopefully help the car survive against other jerks dinging the doors.

The new car came with the carpeted floor mats but I arranged a deal for my friends mom to buy a used Prius at the local Lexus dealer so they're ordering me the Toyota all weather mat set for making the sale for them haha.

Now I just need a set of the LE or SE wheels and the better sway bars and it should be good to go!

What were your main issues with the Hyundai?

Dodge Aries K
03-03-2017, 11:56 PM
The Hyundai had a lot of stupid issues. It was a huge ordeal to get the rear suspension to not be terrifying. Then it would randomly idle rough and other times it was ok. It tomok forever for the engine to warm up. The final straw was that randomly it would grind shifting gears. Of course Hyundai said everything was fine.

I also installed the cruise control stalk and trim piece so now I just need a clutch switch (or just bypass it because I never step on the clutch to turn it off anyway) and then the cruise control will function. Thanks! I was pleasantly surprised, too.

So the dealer I bought the car from put the clutch pedal switch in for me and gave me the switch free of charge which was awesome. They were shocked that it would work just plugging the stuff in and we're happy that they could suggest that to other Yaris (and Corolla) purchasers who buy the more basic units. So now the cruise control works just fine. They also installed the rear bumper protector thing so I'll have to go take a picture of that.

Does (or did) anyone make better engine mounts for these cars? I always installed better mounts into my stick shift Neons and, while increasing vibrations and noise, made for a much more pleasant driving experience.

So yeah, we had a freak hail storm out here. The stuff was darn near 2 inches in diameter. So my silver Yaris, my Scion xA I just got, and my wife's blue Yaris are trashed. No windows broke, fortunately. However, the bodies are trashed... I have a feeling the insurance will most likely total the Scion and possibly the other two as well. I'll know more Thursday when the insurance person is here. I've already started going around to different places for paintless dent removal quotes. Hopefully I can have it done for less than the insurance payment so it can help mare up for lost time. But for all I know they'll declare all 3 cars as total losses.

At least the new Yaris was in the garage. If that was outside too, I'd be in tears for sure.

Dodge Aries K

So the blue and silver Yarii suffered about $4500 worth of damages each. Of course, because they're financed the insurance company won't pay us directly so that sucks because I wanted to take them to some of the cash only body work places that do good work for cheap.

As for the Scion, they declared it a total loss. They're offering me $1998 (yes, really) for it which is bull. I told them to find me another 2006 Toyota product that's 4 doors and good on fuel with no problems for that kind of money and they said they had no comparable units found on their computer. So that isn't going to fly and I'm sure I'm in for an unpleasant fight about it. The buyback was almost $1300 on it too, which is stupid. I can't get it to look okay again for $700 especially since some of the hail dents on it actually cracked the paint so it's definitely in need of a lot of body work.

Dodge Aries K
05-22-2017, 02:01 AM
Okay, so an update. I found a body shop that is willing to pretty much just discount us our deductibles so that way we have a very minimal out of pocket cost for fixing the two Yarii which is nice since I'd be bringing them both cars (and they're set to make a very good amount of money from it). As for the Scion, I'm still arguing with them about the value but the idiot adjuster that was here told me the wrong information about the buyback amount. It turns out that the buyback is $600 and change so that's way better than the almost $1300 he told me. If I can convince them to give me a bit more and keep the car, I'll go buy the paintless dent removal tools and attempt to fix the Scion a bit myself. Since it's supposed to be the backup Uber car, I need to try to get most of the damage out so I can use it for work. If anything, it still runs great so at least if I keep it I can sell it to someone needing a cheap car to get to work versus it ending up in the junkyard if the insurance company takes it especially since I just put new rear wheel bearings in and it recently had new brakes front and rear.

Speaking of wheel bearing, I tried to change the front one and that damn retainer clip thing wouldn't budge. I took the knuckle to pep boys and they torched, air hammered, and beat it senseless and it still wouldn't let go... so off to the junkyard tomorrow to just get a used knuckle with hopefully a good wheel bearing in it. I can't believe how awful that clip got rusted in and seized.

Dodge Aries K
05-25-2017, 12:36 AM
Okay, another update. Scion is written off. I got to keep it and they gave me $1503. These odd numbers of their's... I don't get it... but it was an extra 300ish dollars over what they originally said. So that's over and done with now. Hopefully the various shops out here will have time to get the Yarii fixed.

Also with the Scion, I just bought a used knuckle with a good wheel bearing. So it's back on the road and functional again.
