Solve The Yaris Mystery!

My Yaris will be eight years old next April. For the first five years I kept the hubcaps on and the rust marks quickly developed where the vents holes were in the hubcaps. (see picture) I assumed that was because the metal was exposed to the elements. I also assumed the parts of the wheel that didint rust was because they were protected by the hubcaps.

When I left the caps off for good I figured oh well now the entire wheel will rust.

But after three years that hasnt happened!

I guess the hubcaps are holding salty slush inside, against the wheel rim, rather than letting it fall away naturally.

Thats because a metal piece which have some parts of it exposed to air will rust the ones that arent. Its a usual galvanic reaction which gets sped by the part that salts are present in the water (or mud) that covers these parts (as mentioned), as salts speed up these galvanic corrosion.

actualy the answer is simple....IV..yes the sun killed the exposed paint...its more common than you think, now the rest of the wheel has 8 years of being protected advantage over the rest of the wheel....some paints are less capable of handling UV

It's very common to see wheels with hub caps turn like this. Takes more than 3 years for them to rust

Though, I haven't had a hub cap in 13 years.
