Ladies and gents, I'd like to introduce Dory. Finding Dory was long and difficult. I spent at least half a year looking for a new daily driver...just happened to be blue, so I thought "Dory" was a fitting name . She's going to give Snow White some rest from daily driver duties. haha

https://scontent.fsac1-2.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/15698234_10212020743580235_2320720696642639877_n.j pg?_nc_cat=105&oh=2a69b8d356c825698986a670e596ee46&oe=5C517E2A

She had a little under 21,200 miles on her when I picked her up a few days ago.
This pic was taken when I pulled into my insurance office.
https://scontent.fsac1-2.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t31.0-8/15625933_10212020746380305_7216275105304948750_o.j pg?_nc_cat=105&oh=f0a7dcc813f20e6c5a3efe61f97f6cab&oe=5C1966C5

After giving her a much needed vacuum and interior wipe down, I installed some pure white interior LEDs in the interior.

As mentioned, she's the new DD, so I won't be going crazy on the mods; but stay tuned, I do have some other stuff on the way. haha

Look at all that ground clearance! I bet this one won't get stuck at work.

I still have my Tein S.Tech springs from the Vios, so Dory will eventually be lower. Haha. Don't think enough to get stuck like Snow White. Hahaha

Dory is an '08 stick, btw.

Installed white LEDs in the reverse lights. The OEM ones weren't good at all (worse than the FR-S, which I didn't think were possible).

lol. Couldn't pass her up. I wiped off the coolant spray under the hood to see if the WP needs to be replaced, or was replaced but just never documented (would be the one maintenance that wasn't). So far, don't see the line.

Nice. I still trip out on how I actually felt an improvement with the K&N - but not until the ECU was reset.

I didn't really feel a difference when I did it in the Vios. I felt a big difference when I got the K&N Typhoon intake for it. I didn't feel like dropping that kind of cash for Dory tho. I'll go to Home Depot tomorrow to see if I can find any tubing that's the same diameter as the inlet hole for the snorkel/silencer tube. That way I can plumb it to get fresh, cooler air.

Funny thing is with the FR-S, I felt a negative difference with a SRI. Loss of power, loss of driveability, bogging down. Went back to the K&N drop in for it (which I felt a positive difference from the OEM filter).

This was the SRI for the FR-S. I had it on for a week, and I couldn't stand it, so I sold it for cheap.

Yeah, I guess the FR-S intake is pretty efficient and optimized. It has a duct that leads to the front bumper to pull in fresh/cooler air. There's not much restriction in the intake system either, so a drop in filter is all you really need for the FR-S unless you want to get rid of the intake noise generator and/or dress up the engine bay.

For me, it just wasn't worth it. I don't drive in the top end very much, so any "gains" that an aftermarket intake could potentially give in the FR-S wasn't worth the sacrifice of abysmal low end performance. With the stock intake, bumper to bumper traffic is manageable, and flooring it from a standstill is possible. With that Injen SRI, bumper to bumper was horrible because of the heat soak (engine would almost stall out). Flooring it from a standstill was impossible. Engine revs, but then would bog down and car wouldn't accelerate, just bucks. Totally not safe in an emergency situation.

I could not find any plastic ducting though. I'll have to keep looking for that (especially for the same diameter as the silencer tube).

A 3" silicone intake coupler clamps right on the snorkle dick sticking out of the airbox. Look at the passenger side of the radiator/core support...there is a filler panel with a spot thats money for a high pressure outside air feed (kinda like whats stock on an Gt86)

Also did you remove the carbon trap out of the air lid yet?

I popped the hydrocarbon trap out. I removed the silencer tube. I would want the duct to have the least amount of bends in it, so I was just thinking of routing it from the opening left behind by removing the silencer tube, down towards the ground near the splash guard. Do you think it'll be more beneficial to route it from the opening along the radiator fan, and do the passenger side of the radiator support you mentioned?

malibuguy
01-21-2017, 02:14 AM
High pressure air is better then low pressure. You can probably pull it off with mainly a 90* bend to face forward. I think its pretty much a straight shot past the fans. But then you must consider possibly using reflective heat wrap to help with the heat coming off the radiator.

Its something Ive always wanted to try and just never got to.

I used to run a 'hot air' duct that took air off the exhaust side to help reclaim lost MPG during the winter. Killed power but hey 50+ during winter on winter fuel

Thats how I know the 3" clamps on lol

Dang, 50 mpg!? I'm getting 39-41 mpg right now (that's with traffic everyday and rain).

Considering I sit in stop and go traffic on pretty much a daily basis, I don't want to have to deal with heat soaking (which was what I was afraid of in your idea). Plus, I won't be using the snorkel at all. Right now, I'm fine with the opening by itself since it's been cold lately, but once warmer temps start again, I must have that opening filled with the ducting work.

Are there any high pressure areas on the driver's side? How can you find out where high pressure areas are at anyway?

malibuguy
01-21-2017, 09:10 PM
Basically any source of air from ahead of the radiator/condenser. About 1/4 of the surface area of the heat exchangers actually flow air...so all that extra air needs to go somewhere. This is where most OEMs source outside higher pressure air to aid in performance

So if I can some how route the ducting to the side, bottom, or top of the radiator, it should be sufficient? I saw an article online about how on an NA gen Miata, there was a good duct placement at the cowl. I don't think the Yaris has any space near the cowl tho.

malibuguy
01-22-2017, 02:29 AM
Yeah same pricipal. We do not have a cowl quite like them.

Ive seen FiST cars with a cowl intake...maybe Ill take a look at mine tomorrow and see if thats feasible.

But yeah a path with direct access to air ahead of the radiators will do the job

FiST cars?

I'll have to take a look around the radiator on the driver side to see where the best access would be.

But first thing's first, didn't realize the OEM battery in the FR-S is weak, so after not driving it for 9 to 10 days, I went to start it and was denied (lol). So I gotta a find a jumper pack (don't own one and no longer have cables).

Good ol Subaru to thank for since they're the ones that made the FRS. Other owners experience the same thing, and my friend who is a service advisor for a Subaru dealership said he sees it all the time there since Subaru uses weak batteries in relation to their cars electrical system. So I tried looking, there's really no way to get in front of the radiator. I might be forced to pop off the driver side fog light cover and route the ducting to that opening. I'm thinking that should be a high pressure zone anyway since many people use that location on cars for brake cooling.

Since I couldn't use the VLEDs HVA bulbs in the RS tails, I moved them to the front.

Looks goofy with the lowered stance and stock hubcaps. Especially if you started at the back, saw the low bumper, nice exhaust and taillights, and... wait a minute...

I definitely like the exterior of the '08 and '07 hatchbacks over the refresh they did in '09. The changes are subtle, but I don't think for the better. I like the post-refresh interior changes, though.

Would that count as a neck breaker if they turned their head to do a double take because of the hub caps? LOL

It's the daily driver. lol. I'll eventually get wheels, just waiting for a sale or some deal. I'll run down these tires first, and get wheels and tires at the same time. I'm thinking 15x8 949Racing 6UL in tungsten would look nice. I'd like the set up to be near or even lighter than the OEM steelies and tires.

I prefer the zenki years too. I like the interior of the new Yaris, but their seats, imo, are terrible. Can't sit in one for more than 5 minutes.

I don't think the steelies and hubcaps look bad. It's just not what I'm used to seeing on a lowered car. It seems like most people start with the wheels, then move on to exhaust, springs, etc.

I was only talking about the '09 refresh, with the little horizontal strips at the corners of the bumpers, different grille, nicer HVAC knobs, and different fabric on otherwise identical seats. I don't think most people even notice the differences.

It's usually best to lower the car first and then get wheels. I say this because if you get wheels and then lower it, you might have clearance issues. If you lower first, you can research the wheel specs to get the fitment you want.

Looks to be about the same intensity as the filament bulb (installs crooked in the rep RS tail, not sure if the filament bulb did too since it's less than half the length of the LED bulb and is globular in shape vs a stick). Wasn't worth taking a pic. Then again, I should have looked at how the light was actually thrown behind the car...

ern-diz
02-26-2017, 03:01 PM
lol, they're about the same brightness as the filament bulb, but just produces a more smooth throw (less hotspots) and illuminates the foreground (directly behind the car) better.

Yeah, man, looks nice.

There's a small 4-digit code on the sidewall of each tire if you want to know for sure. The first two digits are the week, and the last two are the year the tire was manufactured. "1608" would mean the 16th week of 2008, for example.

Yup. That's the catch. Most tire shops may refuse working on tires older than 6 years old as well. That's why I didn't bother trying to have my tire repaired cuz I didn't want to be in the position to be forced to buy a tire for the steelies.

Left side is the Osram, right side is a week old eBay one (cuz that side died after a month). Osrams are brighter, and more pure white so they match better with my 5000k Morimoto Elite HIDs (despite being advertised as 6000k) where as the eBay ones are at least 6000k. Hoping the Osrams last longer than the eBay ones.

After hours and hours, I'm finally done. Washed with Gold Class wash, clay barred with Meg's mild blue bar, Scratch-x'd every since inch (to minimize the swirls on the car, and cuz I was doing everything by hand [if I had a DA, I'd use Swirl-X]), Deep Crystal Polish, and Collinite 476s wax. I clay barred and waxed the headlights, taillights, and windows as well.

I just got a DA polisher, but I won't be detailing Dory again until next year. What sucks is shortly after I did the detail, the stupid power washer crew washed my car and slapped their damn hose on it (I park next to our new car inventory). So now she once again has swirl marks and even worse, SCRATCHES! I swear, we pay these fools to damage our cars, and it's the person who sells the car that ends up paying for it.

They're the intake ducting for my twin turbo set up http://www.8thcivic.com/forums/images/smilies/rotfl.gif. I'm jk, the previous owner set up the car to be towed behind an RV (but never was). It took the place of the OEM crash beam, so I can't remove it unless I get an install a new crash beam. Speaking of which, I need to find someone to give the other half of the towing kit (the part that goes to the towing vehicle).

Yeah, I really like it. It completely changes the look of the car from afar. I was debating between playing it safe and going with light gray, or going "crazy" and going with gold. In the end, silver was too subtle (even for me, and I like subtly), and gold...well, I didn't want to go with a Subaru look

I was concerned that the bronze would be too brown (looks like it on Tire Rack), but in person, they really are more, well, bronze. Although, I did clean, clay bar, (paint) polish, and threw on 2 coats of wax on each wheel (face, barrel, and back of face), so that may have altered the color a bit (like it did on the blazing blue).

I usually don't like the design of virtually any aftermarket wheels that I have seen for sale in the USA, but I have to admit those (Sparco TROFEO 4) look good  on your Yaris, minus the rectangular company lettering plastered the very outer rims. Much nicer wheel stance at 37mm offset (16 in version). I would be tempted to spring for the slightly altered Sparco TROFEO 5 design on mine (in Light Grey), which I prefer a bit over the TROFEO 4 design, but they aren't available for the Yaris (I assume due to the integrated 5-lug only type design) - go figure.

I had hoped that the stickers would be optionally placed on the wheels, but unfortunately they're not. That's the one thing that bothered me about the Trofeo 4.

I do like split 5-spoke designs, actually got the WedsSport TC105N on my FR-S.

https://scontent.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/18813694_10213653883567714_3348392708634645003_n.j pg?oh=8ab4b0aca3a9e166d4390f71999e1b15&oe=59CED2E8

But I don't think they would pair too well with a 4-lug pattern unless the hub portion was recessed in like in the various wheels I had on my previous Yaris (like how the TC105N are above).

https://scontent.fsnc1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/17237_1365941594917_3935882_n.jpg?oh=36d086c9f7b82 da2084825e8e9a68d5f&oe=599F0806

Otherwise, they impose on the design like so (another set of split 5-spoke I had):

There's tons of different weave patterns for composites for various applications. Each has a strength and weakness. When I was making the hull for my engineering project many moons ago when I was still in college, we stuck with what was cheap vs. what was actually good for our application due to budgets. Would have been nice to play with some basalt fiber on that project.

Don't get me wrong, I can totally see a hydrodip in that pattern. Maybe a valve cover done in that style. It's definitely a personal preference thing, so no right or wrong answer, or disrespect intended.

I would absolutely rock a wrap in that color and pattern over some of the wraps I've seen out there

Wow, I love all the work you've done and I absolutely love the Blazing Blue! I'm going to follow this thread and may ask you for some tips when I finally find a Yaris similar to yours. :) I've been looking for a Yaris like this for awhile now in Hawaii and actually flew to the Bay Area to buy one at a dealership to ship back home, but it didn't work out.

Thanks! A blazing blue hatchback was what I originally wanted when I got my first Yaris and intended on getting one new back in 2006. Went into a dealership and saw a flint mica Yaris sedan, and took it home. lol.

So it's funny that after spending over 6 months looking for a good used Yaris, that it's the one that I found. I drove all the way down to SoCal to get her.

As long as you don't finance it, you should be able to ship back a car to Hawaii. Check SoCal's craigslist as well, never know, might find one like I did.

Will do. I have a 50w one in the FR-S that's thumping along. This 100w one should be fine as well since I won't have to turn up the gains as much. I'll set a LPF crossover on it as well (can't remember if it already has one).

So clearly we were separated at birth! I pre-ordered a Blazing Blue hatchback with a six week wait time, but a Bayou Blue hatchback came in a couple weeks later, so I brought that one home instead. The impetuousness of youth.

Yeah, that wouldn't matter to me either. As long as I can pair my phone and run my apps from the radio, I wouldn't care that it wasn't native to the radio. If there are any benefits to android auto running native on the radio, aside from not having to sync your phone to it, I'm unaware of them.

Cut out the factory speakers

Pardon my lack of knowledge, but since I would like to do this as well, I have a few questions.

1. It appears that the stock speakers don't attach with screws but actually need to be cut out of a speaker holder?

2. How did you attach the new speakers to the speaker hole? Did your speakers come with that black circular mounting bracket?

3. Did you run new speaker wires to the head unit?

I've seen a few threads on how to remove the door panels so that seems not too bad. Thanks for your input! I love seeing all your progress.

Yeah, removing the door is pretty easy.

1. Pop off the arm rest panel.
2. Pop off the middle panel that has the switches and disconnect switches.
3. Pop off the panel above that panel.
4. Pop off a small black plastic piece at the front of the door panel (kinda hard to remove, I used a wide flat head screw driver and gently popped it off, wrap the tip with electrical tape to help prevent damaging the plastics).
5. Remove the screw at the door handle.
6. Remove the three screws under panels from step 1 and 2.
7. Starting from the bottom, pop off the door panel and work your way up.
8. Lift up and remove the door panel (gotta unhook the door handle and door lock).

Removing the speaker is straight forward too if you don't plan on reusing the factory speakers.
1. Disconnect the wire harness from the speaker.
2. With a hobby/xacto knife, cut out the factory paper speakers (I cut them out at the surrounds).
3. Snip the plastic pieces holding the speaker onto the bracket.
4. Pulled off the factory wires from the speaker. It takes some finessing, but it'll come off. Remove any blue sealant from the solder (provided there are still solder on the wire after ripping it off the speaker).
5. Remove the wire from the black holder to free them.
6. Hold up the new speaker onto the factory mounting bracket and center it.
7. Using a Sharpie, dot onto the foam piece where the screws will go through.
8. With the new speaker out, use the xacto knife to make a pilot hole through the foam and onto the gray plastic piece.
9. Using the screws provided with the new speaker, screw in and remove from pilot holes.
10. Attach the wires to the speaker. I shortened mine and attached butt connectors to the ends.
11. Connect the butt connectors to the appropriate factory wires. Follow the colors to see which wire is which.
LF Speaker: pink-, purple+
RF Speaker: gray-, blue+
10. If your speaker has a screw mount, slip it over the foam and plastic mount.
11. Hold the new speaker into place and carefully screw it onto the foam/gray mount.
12. Plug the wire connector back in and test the speakers to make sure they are working before putting everything back together.

Since Dory is my "beater car," I'm not really looking to spend money if I don't have to...I know, I know, I bought the Kenwood HU and the wheels and tires, but there was a reason for those. I needed USB connection to play music and BT for safety. I had to replace the tires because the factory tires were coming off in chunks (might as well replace the wheels, lol).

I got these CV speakers for free, as well as the Bazooka bass tube, from my previous employment (recently resigned there). I even got the other Bazooka bass tube for the FR-S for free there as well. Items were bought using points earned (don't want anyone thinking I stole them). So, unless the rear speakers blow out, I will not be replacing them. I have the HU set so that the rear speakers aren't producing any low ends, only mids and highs. I have the HPF set to like 150hz and at a 12dB/octave slope. So I don't foresee them blowing anytime soon. lol. I have the front speakers set to 60hz HPF at 18dB/octave slope.

I'm just waiting for Bazooka to send me the FAST-9999 harness that was supposed to be in the box, and then I'll have some nice lows.

If anyone's getting force fed, it'll be Snow White (FR-S). lol. She's on standby for now as the only mods I want to get some time in the future for her are front and side splitters, and rear diffuser. Yup. You can see the wire harness in the pic. Just unclip it, and out the tube goes. I did the same with the FR-S when it was my only car. It's not that heavy either, so you can just use one hand and grab it by the port and lift it out.

I recommend them if you don't need window rattling bass and/or you don't want to run a power cable through the firewall (only the 50w and 100w powered versions).

Thankfully my commute hours are not during rush hour traffic, so that helps. It's actually almost the same amount of time as my previous (60-mile) commute.

I was running Morimoto 35w HIDs, but it had a major issue, so I remove them and reinstalled the factory halogen while I was installing the fog lights. Keep us updated on how these work out! Still trying to decide on what direction to go with my lighting after so many faulty HID kits.

Stock halogen vs these Profile Peak LEDs. Bottom are obviously the X5 LED foglights.

One of the rear speakers started going out not too long after the Kenwood HU was installed, so decided to upgrade them to Infinity Reference speakers.

Just like the front speakers, I did the lazy way of installing them by simply cutting out the OEM paper speakers and just screwing the new speakers over the OEM brackets.

Thanks. It was the quickest way. lol. I didn't feel like drilling out the factory brackets, and risk the aftermarket brackets not fitting (as I've read happening before on other kinds of Toyotas). So I just used the wire harness adapter and not the brackets.

Wanted to update the interior a bit, so decided to get rid of the green glow of the HVAC controls and make them modern and classy with VLEDs white HVAC bulbs.

Also replaced the stock side markers bulbs (top) with VLEDs HVA 360* bulbs (bottom). Pic doesn't do them justice, especially since the VLED side had more day light shining on it compared to the stock bulb side (garage was opened).

And what about their life circle?? Do they burn easily??
I am looking right now for leds because I want to change all the stock yellow bulbs to white leds and so far I have read lots of bad reviews about the majority of them. I even saw reviews about melted boards What’s your experience?

Also I have an interesting question. If I replace the dome light with led bulb, the effect that the light closes slowly works? I don’t know how to describe, but when the light goes off, it goes slowly like it fades with the normal bulbs. I know it’s not that important but I do like it. [emoji28]

My experience with eBay LEDs are either hit or miss. These have been good. They do get warm after being on for a while.

However, for very important or hard to get to lights, I go to my favorite brand of LEDs, VLEDs. They're very reliable (still have strips from them that are 10 years old by now) and have awesome customer service in case you need warranty work (used once only).

Those boards will still do the gradient/fade effect. However, it'll be more in "steps" (I think that's the nature of LEDs).

Mmm vleds are out of the question for me because I don’t live in USA and the shippings are more expensive than the cost of the led itself so it’s not worth it

Also, as you wired them in the dome light harness, do footwell lights have the fade effect too?

Those T4 LEDs should be fine. I did have to scrape off some of the plastic in the hole of the HVAC unit to make the hole bigger. If you have trouble fitting those in, you might have to do the same. Although I don't suspect that since the LED boards don't look like it's bigger than the top of the base.

That sucks about shipping costing more than the LEDs from VLEDs. You'll have to find a reputable LED manufacturer/brand in your country if there is one.

The footwell LEDs will fade on and off as well.

Yes I guess if I want some led bulbs for important lights such as brakes I will buy either Phillips or osram.

But if I change these with leds I might change all the bulbs to leds, to look similar. But that’s an expensive project for another day.

Not yet but in the feature I will.
Yes they are good for sure. But keep in mind that the whole system has like 12 speakers that are different from each other. So it’s hard to replicate the sound from a car that has the whole system installed, with just 4 speakers of one kind ;)

There are many varieties of paper cone speakers.
The do not have foam. They have rubber.
The foam you see outside is for vibration cancellation purposes.
Even bose systems on cars are paper cone. But somehow they sound awesome.
So for me it isn’t a dealbreaker at all.

I think high end companies use (treated) paper cones because they can produce better all around sounds (especially lower frequencies) than poly cones. Cheap (untreated) paper cones are used because, well, they cost less and are usually paired with cheaper surround material. lol.

Yep. Thats right.
For instance if you compare the paper from b&o speakers to those that our car had from the factory the difference is day night.
And the bass that a paper cone speaker can produce is way way better than poly-vinyl cones.

Well, she past 50k miles the other day. That's 29k miles in 13 months.

Can't blame you. I don't wish to have to commute for work again, but I do look for opportunities to drive. You've quickly done some cool things to the little car, why wouldn't you want to drive it, and if it saves miles on your "nicer" car, then it makes even more sense.

Nothing new, but I did finally get around to washing her at the new place (it's been raining on and off here, and there's no rain in the forecast for the week).

LOL. They call it a 2.5 car garage, so I guess it can be also called a 3 small car garage.

They're BMW X5 LED foglights.

One way to spot my car from far away

Since I already had them, and they work well, I didn't want to spend the money on the better Morimoto XB fog light series.

I feel you. It took us many years of saving to get a place with a garage.

Ironically, my wife's dead '96 Camry sits in there now. She just can't part with it.

Yeah, I'm overall still happy with them. I like them better than the HIDs. However, I would have probably liked the VLEDs equivalent better since they offer 5000k whereas the Profile ones are strictly 6000k.

She can exhale a little better now. Installing was a PITA imo, because getting to the bolts and nuts was rather difficult.

I watched some video comparisons and I do like the whiter color of the 5k vs the bluer 6k.

Nice looking exhaust manifold! Is this designed to increase performance?

Yeah, it's the DC Sports header, so performance should increase a bit. So far, I feel a loss of torque from taking off from a stop, but increase shortly thereafter. Hoping it'll help with all the headwind I encounter on a daily basis, and the several steep grades I drive over.

She passed 70k yesterday. Also, battery took a dump, so I had to get a new one. Decided to go with a Duralast Platinum AGM battery. Most I've ever spent on a car battery. lol.

Decided to replace the front Cerwin Vega speakers with these Focal Integration ISS 165 components. Don't have a hole saw, so I couldn't flush mount the tweeter, but they still look somewhat OEM being surface mounted at that location (was originally going to put them at the trim panel next to the quarter window.

Thanks! Maybe down the road, I'll pick up a hole saw bit and a hot glue gun so that I can flush mount the tweeters in place for an even more OEM look.

Installed a Tap-Turn flasher relay and trying out how the Profile Peak amber LEDs are (in relation to VLEDs and cheap eBay LEDs). Activated strobe mode and the wig-wag feature. The link above is the video I have of it on my fb.
