Cars like the Rio and Spark have an edge in MSRP price and the Toyota's good ole reliable 4 speed auto isn't doing it any favours with regards to fuel economy.

I just averaged 39.9 mpg on a 1,300 mile trip in a rental with that good ole reliable 4 speed auto.

That's better than I average in my 5 speed.

Then again, I have over sized wheels and am far from a granny driver

It's also more than I managed in my own 5-speed on a similar trip, but it was colder with lots of strong headwinds, and I was going faster. I mostly kept the rental between 65 and 70, and the weather was nice to me that time.

When you factor in the incredible reliability and Toyota's strong resale value, I doubt any car could beat the Yaris in affordability, even with a lower MSRP.

I totally agree with scratchpaddy.
Over the long haul the Yaris should be #1 in having the lowest cost, to drive & maintain. Not to mention that its a great car to zip around in town or out on the open road.
