Stuck in first gear

Hi I own a 2008 yaris vvt automatic. Yesterday I started the car it would rev but not go as if it was not in gear. I turned off ignition and restarted it, only to find the car was stuck in 1st gear. Tried moving gear stick from drive to reverse and back to neutral without success. Eventually I went into the manual gear change and got the car to change to 2 be gear and back to neutral where the car started for me. My question is, is there anything I can do to stop this reoccurring and does this mean my gear box is on its way out. Any ideas thanks

I forgot the name of this, but there is a switch by the gearbox that tells the computer which gear you are in. This might be defective.
