View Full Version : 255 songs?
The factory radio only recognizes 255 songs on my USB thumb drive.
Am I doing something wrong? I have thousands of songs on this drive.

yea its lame
you have to create multiple folders with a max of 255 each
none of my other cars had this problem
overall its a good sound system though

I was hoping that would solve the issue. I can make folders. Is there a folder max as well?

If there is a folder limit I've not found it yet.
This dates back to the limits of original FAT file systems. Many older MP3 players as well as CD players that can play MP3 CDs still have this limit.
Normally I break my songs up by artist or album. You can quickly skip through folders on the radio, although this requires taking your eyes off the road...

My MP3 music collection is split into 3 folders due to the 255 songs/folder limit - Favorite Song Titles #-L, M-Z, & JPop/JRock/Anime music.
There is no need to manually select folders, unless you have them organized in such a way that you want to hear something from a certain folder. The system will automatically start in the first folder and proceed to the next when it finishes that folder, and then cycle all over again from the start when it runs out of folders.
I believe that even the (not-so-random) random song function bounces between all folders like they are all part of one big group. I just let my head unit proceed sequentially through all the folders in a never-ending loop that takes a few weeks to complete, and never have to mess with the folders, touchscreen, etc.

The stock head unit is made by Pioneer and every single Pioneer deck I've owned that supports USB has this limitation. So has most other aftermarket decks I've encountered except for this really nice JVC I had back in the early 2000's.
The head unit has random options for songs and folders. Still learning how the unit works, but it's been pretty simple so far.

Most units will play the songs in each folder in alphanumeric order. If you want the songs in a folder to play in a particular order, you probably want to rename them to start with numbers - 001xxxx, 002xxxx and so on.
