First generation liftback models marketed between 1999 and 2005 were called the "Yaris" and "Echo" depending on the market, but all were derived from the Japanese-market Toyota Vitz (XP10).

Second generation liftback models (2005–2013) were marketed under the "Yaris" name worldwide, but in fact were derived from the Japanese-market Toyota Vitz (XP90).

Third (current) generation liftback models have been marketed since 2011 under the "Yaris" name worldwide. Originally available only as a hatchback, the liftbacks wee derived from the Toyota Vitz (XP130), introduced in early 2011. A sedan body style arrived in 2013.

The first generation sedans and coupes were derived from the Toyota Platz (XP10), second generation sedans from the Toyota Belta (XP90), and third generation sedans from the Toyota Vios (XP150).
