Hi all,
I own a 2010 Yaris. Recently, the low engine oil pressure light (red) came on, and after a garage check it turned out that there is a pressure differential between 2 engine valves, resulting in increased engine oil consumption. The dealership I bought the car from took the car in, flushed the engine an I ill report back to them after 1000 km. They told me they would help me with the repairs if the oil consumption exceeds the manufacturers' specifications. They claim that this is on the order of 500-600 cc per 1000 km, which seems to me way too much, given that the engine oil capacity is only 3.2-3.4L. I couldn't find this detail (normal oil consumption rate) in the manual, could anyone refer me to this information?

Engine model is 1-NR.

Thanks!
Ron

I don't what Toyota states for oil use, but some makes says 1qt. per 1,000 miles. I have a 1995 Tocoma with 100,000 mile and a 2015 Yaris with 40,000 miles, and the 2003 Echo I traded in on the Yaris had 180,000 miles and none of them need oil between changes.

Did they flush the oil, and did they do a compression check. If so what was the compression

They did flush the oil if I understood correctly. One place said that there was a 30% pressure differential between two pistons, another garage (of the company I bought the car from) said less... Each give the "facts" that best serve their purpose, so it's hard to know where the truth lies...

You are being had ie lied to.

Difference in compression between two cylinders has nothing to do with oil consumption.

Start checking your oil once a week. Add oil to bring the level up to the top line. Its OK for the level to be somewhere between the two lines but when it gets near the bottom one, add half a quart and check it the next day.

Check the oil in the morning with a cold engine that hasnt been run overnight.

Then report back.

PS My wifes car with 140,000 miles uses a quart of oil every 4000 miles.

From the owners manual for my 2006 1NZ. I can't imagine a healthy engine consuming a maximum of 1 litre/1000km, but that is indeed what they publish.

Yes, the garage told me to check as well. What are possible negative effects of the difference in valve pressure? Lower engine power?
Thanks for the help!

Hey you would lose a little power. That's less compression, means less power. That amount in one cylinder I don't think you would feel it. Unless you guys are drag racing. My 2008 HB 135,000 miles never uses oil, freaks me out. Highway miles like driving 75-80 for long period of time will use oil and of course aggressive driving will do the trick also. Would really be surprised if there is and internal problem that motor is TOUGH.

Its interesting that this oil burning is in a 1NR. I was under the impression Toyota fixed the oil burning for the NR and ZR engines.

My 06 Hatchback with the 1KR-FE engine is using about 600 to 700ml every 1000 miles. It gets a lot of motorway driving at 70-80mph which worsens it. I check the oil and top up every couple of weeks. Its been doing this since around 70,000 miles and has worsened gradually over time.

If it were an older 3rd gen or A/S series engine i would advise just to monitor the situation and keep the oil topped up until it gets silly. I've seen them get as bad as 1 litre every couple hundred miles and this was usually a valve issue. I'm not familiar with the NR engines. It might be a symptom of something wrong.

Toyota likely publishes a high oil burning amount so that they can avoid having to fix most oil burning issues. They can get away with it because technically every engine burns some oil to a certain extent.

IMO, I would be pretty concerned if my 2010 engine was burning as much oil as yours and I wouldn't be satisfied with a simple oil flush.

There is a few things that could be causing this but it is more likely a piston ring/oil port problem

There is a TSB regarding startability issues . That is due to carbon deposits on the valves and lack of compression.

At the time of the repair new pistons, rings and rods are fitted along with oil squirters and new design valve cover.

Cheep gas and additives. What's the cost of all this.
