View Full Version : If you use Photobucket ...

If you use Photobucket to host your images here (or anywhere else), you'll note they're all broken links. (See my signature image, for example)

Photobucket simply decided to roll out a pricing plan ($399 USD/yr) that requires you to pay for third-party hosting. I'm guessing just about every image I've ever posted here is now gone. I was with Photobucket for 13 years. And fine, if they want to start charging, great. However, let users know before they simply stop letting images display on forums/blogs/websites.

I'm not sure what the best alternative is. Luckily, I pay for web hosting, so I can host my own.

Here's PC Magazine's take:

The bastards!

All my images here are attachments in my posts and therefore hosted by and 'owned' by YW. No worries of them disappearing with only downside is them only being visible to registered users. Never used Photobucket myself.

Never used Photobucket, but I was curious about the message that recently appeared in your postings. Mystery solved.

Does that mean Photobucket users will lose their stored photos unless they pay the new fee?

Screenshot that Photobucket replacement image for a class action lawsuit.
Lengthy agreed-to terms undoubtedly let PB stop free hosting. But do they really let them mess up all your third party writings with that lying defamatory image?
Lying, in the sense that for a lot of us it won't be "temporary," because we're not going to pay the ransom.
Lying, in the sense it is showing a dial needle swung past 100%, when my free hosting usage, per their report, is 1%.
Defamatory, because it makes it seem like I ran past some data storage limit when I wasn't even close, and not doing something about it.

Wow! Seconds after I posted, they removed the "temporary" sentence and reduced the image size.
Photobucket has always been difficult to use, but am I the only one w/ at least a few photos (left on) there that are part of message forum posts, etc.?

I'm not sure, but I don't believe this is targeted at individuals. Seems to me they are wanting to hit up forum owners for the privilege of allowing links to images PB are hosting.

I'm an individual PB user, not a forum owner, and got an email on the subject from Photobucket<info@pbdeals.com>("Some features on your account have been disabled.")the morning this started happening.

You know times are hard when you want to charge people hundreds of dollars just to store and host photos on the internet.

Like Wee, I resize my images so they're forum friendly and then use the paper clip icon to upload them directly.

Google offers free, unlimited photo storage (at HD quality) with Google Photos. You can share single images, albums, animations, etc. by link. I wonder what would happen if you grabbed the link to an image and used that as the image URL?

That doesn't work. Viewing shared images require login and permissions.

All the pictures I've got linked appear to still be working...

Gotcha. I figured as much, but never actually tried it.

I've also been using the basic SmugMug plan for years, which is just under $50 per year now. I like it because it's easy to use and doesn't try to be a social media site.

This Photobucket deal really sucks for everyone, though. Invaluable old how-to's on this forum and others are going to be riddled with broken image links now.
