Temporary cv boot repair?

Hey guys have a torn cv boot and all grease gone out of it. Can't afford to have it replaced at the moment, how can I patch this up enough until I can get it done right?

You can't ...just replace the drive shaft lot cheaper

If it wa me Id wrap it in Saran wrap real good to prevent dirt destroying the joint until I could replace it.

Won't hold ...that shaft is spinning fast and by the sounds of it no point it's done just drive it and if it starts making noises stop and replace it

You can get a half shaft assembly cheap at Canadian tire.the first set I got from there lasted awhile.If it's not clicking to bad online can be even cheaper if you can wait a couple weeks.

Try the Saran Wrap. If it comes off it comes off. If it doesn't it doesn't. Don't let someone's opinion defeat you!

It doesn't click at all so I think the axle is repairable as its just the boot torn. I'll give that and a couple other things a try to keep grease in it for a couple of weeks.

That's true if you catch the boot when it first tears. I'm not sure how long the CV joint well last with a torn boot. A shop will tell you it's just as expensive for them to put in a Rebuilt axle as it is for them to replace just the boot.

I think its been torn for a long time by the amount of grease that's around the area. I'm gonna patch it up somehow and whenever the axle gives out ill hopefully be able to replace it then. It's the outer boot that's torn on the driver side

It's the outer boot that usually goes first the inner ones last longer. Keep your eye on the outer boot on the opposite side that's libel to go to.

Not sure how long you've got before the driver side CV joint fails. But when it does fail the axle can flail around and do a lot of damage maybe even cause an accident. It'll start clicking when you go around corners. You can grab the axle at the joint and wiggle it back-and-forth to see how much it moves to to judge how long before he comes loose. Like maybe check it once a week? It might even be a year before it's not safe to drive it and driving carefully without hard acceleration or cornering will probably make it last longer.

They make a split boot you can put on it without removing the axle, don't know how successful people have been that have used them.

new drive-shaft after market is 150$ Canadian and 30 min to install possibly even cheaper in USA or try a junkyard , honestly its lot cheaper to get a new shaft cos its way more labour intense to replace the torn boot ....just saying but like someone said my opinion dont count even tho i work on cars all day for a living .

Sorry about that! But it sounded to be like the OP didnt have the money for the repairs and just needed to get by until the money came along.

BTW just how long will it take to destroy the joint after the boot is torn?:iono:

Honestly there is no time line , if it just happened and still has grease may last little but if all out it's just matter of time...and if it goes driving it will cause lots of damage also ull be stuck in nutral with no power etc .
Just my opinion lol
